Sony has started pushing out Android 10 to its Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 handsets. Those two devices are the company’s flagship offerings. Well, the Xperia 1 is, and the Xperia 5 is its more compact counterpart.

Sony may not be the first company to release Android 10 for its devices, but the company is improving. Last month, Sony did promise that Android 10 will arrive to the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 in December, and the company kept to its promise.

Android 10 is now available for the Xperia 1 & 5, but it seems like it’s buggy

It’s only December 5th, and the updates are already here. Android 10 is rolling out OTA (over-the-air) to the two devices, under the v55.1A.0.748 build. This is a global update, by the way, it is coming to all unlocked Xperia 1 and 5 global variants.

This update not only upgrades both phones to Android 10, but it also brings along an Android security patch for November 2019.

Do note that some users already reported issues with this update. For some of them, the update disabled calling and mobile data functionality. So, it may be wise to wait and see what will Sony say regarding that. The company may have to release another hotfix update.

The company has also updated the AOSP binaries, but the kernel source for the latest build has not been published just yet.

This update has started rolling out to global Xperia 1 and 5 variants, but we’re looking at a staged rollout here. The update is first rolling out to a small number of users, and will reach more users in the coming days, if Sony doesn’t pause it in the meantime.

This update is rolling out to users in the US and Europe at the moment. The phone will let you know once the update is available, though you can also manually check via settings.

Both of these phones launched this year

Both the Sony Xperia 1 and 5 were announced earlier this year. The Xperia 1 arrived back in February, as the company’s new flagship. The Xperia 5 followed in September, as a spiritual successor to the company’s ‘Compact’ series.

Both of these phones are made out of metal and glass, and both are quite tall. Both devices utilize a 21:9 display aspect ratio, and don’t come with display notches or holes.

The Snapdragon 855 fuels both phones, and both of them utilize OLED displays. The Xperia 1’s display offers higher resolution, though. You’ll find 6GB of RAM in both of those phones, and Android 9 Pie comes out of the box.

The two devices utilize the exact same cameras, that goes for both their rear and front-facing cameras. Stereo speakers are also a part of the package, and the same goes for a microSD card slot.
