2020 is the year that Samsung steps up its camera game on the Galaxy S20 and leaves everyone in the dust.
The Galaxy S20 series all have different camera modules. Though the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ are mostly the same.
With the Galaxy S20, there is a main 64-megapixel sensor. With two 12-megapixel sensors for telephoto and ultrawide. The Galaxy S20+ adds in a Time of Flight sensor, which is going to allow for better Bokeh and depth of field.
Things get pretty crazy with the Galaxy S20 Ultra though. There is a 108-megapixel main sensor available here. With a 48-megapixel telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens.
Larger camera sensors mean more light, and better night mode
All of these sensors are larger than their predecessors. This allows the lens to take in more light and produce even better pictures, before it gets to post processing. On top of that, you’re going to get better low-light pictures out of these cameras too.
With these larger sensors, you can expect much better shots in low-light and at night. Samsung also updated its Night Mode. And it looks really promising, mostly thanks to the hardware in the Galaxy S20 series.
Space Zoom is absolutely nuts
Space Zoom. Yes, that is what Samsung is calling its new crazy zoom feature in the Galaxy S20 series. On the Galaxy S20, you’re getting 6x zoom, Galaxy S20+ gets 30x and the Galaxy S20 Ultra goes all the way to 100x. On each phone, it is using the highest resolution sensor for zoom. To do this, it is combining a few different things. Hybrid Optic Zoom and AI-powered digital zoom.
That means that the Galaxy S20 and S20+ are using the 64-megapixel sensor, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra uses the 108-megapixel sensor. All three devices have had optical zoom upgraded too. With the Galaxy S20 and S20+ doing 3x optical zoom. The Galaxy S20 Ultra gets 4x optical zoom. That’s up from 2x optical zoom on the Galaxy S10 series.
Samsung is also touting lossless zoom, which combines pixel binning and some sensor cropping. It’s 3x for the Galaxy S20 and S20+, with the Galaxy S20 Ultra having lossless zoom of 10x.
Finally, the cameras on the Galaxy S20 series is also capable of recording in 8K resolution, at 24 frames-per-second. This is enabled by the Snapdragon 865 chipset that is going to be powering the Galaxy S20 series. Samsung will allow users to cast 8K videos shot on the Galaxy S20 series to its 8K QLED TVs, as well as uploading to YouTube (which will play in full 8K resolution), directly from the device.
