Samsung had introduced its new flagship smartphones today, the Galaxy S20 series. As part of that series, the company introduced the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra smartphones. We’ve already talked about them in our announcement post, and it’s now time to take a look at the Galaxy S20 series specifications.
These three devices do have some things in common. Their designs are fairly similar, and so are their specs, but they’re not identical. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ are far more similar in that regard, than the S20 Ultra is with those two phones. That being said, let’s get to it, and check out what the three phones have to offer in the spec department.
120Hz displays, but they come in different sizes
All three Galaxy S20 handsets offer high refresh rate displays. All three phones ship with 120Hz Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED displays. That means that all three of them include a display camera hole, which is centered. All three of them offer high refresh rate, at 120Hz, but you can use it only with a fullHD+ resolution. If you set the resolution to WQHD+ (3200 x 1440), you’ll be reverted to 60Hz.
Now, the Galaxy S20 has the smallest display, it features a 6.2-inch panel. It does have the highest PPI setting because of it, though, 563PPI. The Galaxy S20+ includes a 6.7-inch display, with 525PPI. The S20 Ultra has the largest display at 6.9 inches in diagonal, and offer 511PPI. All of those displays have a 20:9 aspect ratio, by the way.
The Galaxy S20’s display is the least curved. The Galaxy S20+’s display offers a bit more of a curve, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s is most curved. All of these curves are not that pronounced, though, as the curvature on the S20 Ultra is less pronounced than on the S10, for example.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra is the largest, and by far the heaviest handset in the series
The Galaxy S20 Ultra has the largest display, so it’s the largest phone in the series, right? Well, yes. It measures 167 x 76 x 8.8mm. The Galaxy S20+, on the other hand, measures 162 x 74 x 7.8mm. The Galaxy S20 is, by far, the smallest. It measures 152 x 68 x 7.9mm, and is great for one-hand usage.
The Galaxy S20 is quite light, as it weighs only 164 grams. The Galaxy S20+ is a bit heavier at 188 grams, which is somewhat of a standard these days, at least for mid-range and flagship phones with large displays. Most of those devices are at around 180-190 grams. Well, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is considerably heavier than its siblings. The phone weighs a whopping 221 grams.
There’s a good reason for that, though. While the Galaxy S20 and S20+ come with a frame made out of aluminum, the S20 Ultra takes that up a notch. The phone ships with a frame made out of stainless steel, which is tougher, but also considerably heavier than aluminum.
Powerful SoC, Plenty of RAM, and expandable storage
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 64-bit octa-core processor fuels the Galaxy S20 series. The company’s processor supports 5G connectivity, and only 5G variants will be available in the US. The S20 and S20+ will ship in 4G options in some markets, though. It is also worth noting that the Exynos 990 will ship in the Galaxy S20 variants for the Indian market.
All US variants of the Galaxy S20 smartphones include at least 12GB of RAM. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ are available in that variant only, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra also comes in a 16GB RAM variant. All three devices come in a 128GB storage variant. The Galaxy S20 Ultra also has a 512GB storage model, the one that includes 16GB of RAM. Do note that in other markets, Europe included, you can get 8GB RAM variants of the Galaxy S20 and S20+. It’s also worth saying that Samsung opted for the Exynos 990 in Europe and India.
Speaking of storage, it’s expandable, on all three devices. Not many people expected it, but Samsung is offering storage expansion via a microSD card slot. In case you’re wondering, you can expand the storage on each of these phones up to an additional 1TB. It’s also worth noting that Samsung included UFS 3.0 storage in these devices.
Large batteries and fast charging
All three Galaxy S20 handsets have fairly large battery packs. The Galaxy S20 includes a 4,000mAh unit, while the Galaxy S20+ sports a 4,500mAh battery. The Galaxy S20 Ultra comes with the largest battery pack, at 5,000mAh. That is not surprising considering that it has the largest display.
The Galaxy S20 and S20+ come with 25W wired charging support, while the ‘Ultra’ model supports 45W wired charging. Do note that all three phones include a 25W charger in the box, so you’ll need to get a 45W one for the S20 Ultra, if you want that functionality. All three phones also support fast wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra has the most powerful camera setup
The Galaxy S20 and S20+ come with the same camera setup. Both devices include three cameras on the back, and one camera on the front. You will find a 12-megapixel main camera (2.4um pixel size) on the back of both devices, which is accompanied by a 64-megapixel telephoto camera (3x lossless zoom). On top of that, a second 12-megapixel camera is also included, for wide-angle shots (1.6x larger sensor than on the S10). The two devices are capable of recording 8K video at 30FPS. Both phones include a 10-megapixel camera on the front, which can record 4K video at 60FPS.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a bit of a different story. The device includes four cameras on the back. It comes with a 108-megapixel main camera, and a 48-megapixel telephoto unit (placed behind a folded zoom lens, up to 10x lossless zoom, 4x optical zoom). A 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera (1.6x larger sensor than on the S10) is also included, along with a ToF (Time-of-Flight) camera. The S20 Ultra is capable of recording 8K videos at 30FPS, and it can provide a 100x digital zoom. The device includes a 40-megapixel front-facing camera as well. This camera can record 4K video at 60FPS.
Audio, software, colors & other tidbits
All three Galaxy S20 handsets offer the same audio setup. All devices come with stereo speakers, which are tuned by AKG. The main speaker sits at the bottom of these devices, while the secondary one is placed underneath the speaker grille.
Android 10 comes pre-installed on these devices, along with Samsung’s One UI 2 skin. All three devices are water and dust resistant, thanks to IP68 certification. Samsung will offer four color variants of these devices. We’re just not sure if all four will be available in all those color options, but they probably will.
The company confirmed that the Galaxy S20 series will ship in Cloud Blue, Cloud Pink, Cosmic Black, and Cosmic Gray variants. In terms of 5G, the S20, and S20+ support sub-6 connection, while the S20 Ultra will support sub-6 and mmWave.
