Samsung has trademarked new technology called ‘Nonacell’. This trademark has been filed with the UK IPO (Intellectual Property Office), and is categorized as a Class 9 trademark.

That means that it has to do with an image sensor, electric sensor, or camera containing an image sensor, based on the official description. That being said, the site who found this trademark, Letsgodigital, suggests this Samsung Nonacell tech could be included in the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Samsung’s smartphones usually use Tetracell tech, also known as ‘Quad Bayer’ tech. That technology makes it possible for the phone’s cameras to merge 4 pixels into one. That enables larger sensors to take more detailed pictures in poor lighting conditions, amongst other things.

Well, this Nonacell tech could be a more advanced variant of Tetracell, essentially. Letsgodigital notes that ‘Nona’ stands for number 9 in Latin, so that could be a huge indicator as to what this is.

Samsung Nonacell tech is expected to merge 9 pixels into 1

Nonacell tech could be able to merge 9 pixels into 1, making cameras more capable. This would be a great fit for the Galaxy S20 Ultra, as the device will include a huge 108-megapixel camera on the back.

If 9 pixels get merged into 1, that camera could be able to take some great-looking 12-megapixel photos as a result. We’re only guessing, of course, it’s possible Samsung will completely miss the mark on this one, but that’s not as likely.

The company has been looking for a way to up their smartphone camera game, and this could be it. We have high expectations for the Galaxy S20 series cameras, especially the S20 Ultra.

Now, this is not the first time that we’re hearing about Nonacell tech. Back in December, Ice Universe, a well-known tipster, mentioned that Samsung’s 108-megapixel sensor will use advanced Nonacell tech.

That, in combination with this trademark, clearly signalized that such tech will be included in the S20 Ultra. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ won’t include it, though, unfortunately. None of those two devices will include a 108-megapixel main camera on the back, so… there you go.

The Galaxy S20 series will become official on February 11

Samsung will announce its Galaxy S20 series soon, on February 11. The company had announced its press conference in San Francisco a while back.

Along with the Galaxy S20 smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip will also become official. That is the company’s second foldable smartphone, following the Galaxy Fold.

All those phones will be made out of metal and glass. The Galaxy S20 Ultra will stand out, though, as it will offer a stainless steel frame, compared to an aluminum frame on the other three devices.
