Sony started rolling out Android 10 to the Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 smartphones last month. It appears the update has broken the handsets for many, and quite severely. In what is likely a widespread issue, many Sony Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 users have taken to online forums like Reddit complaining about a plethora of bugs that have sneaked in with the Android 10 update.

Users are complaining about poor RAM management, accelerated battery drain, sluggish UI, fingerprint scanner fails, and several other issues, Android Police reports, compiling user complaints from several community platforms.

Sony has apparently suspended the rollout. However, the damage has already been done for those who updated to the latest Android version.

Android 10 breaks some Sony Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 units

It is not uncommon for software updates to break features in some devices. Unfortunately, Sony Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 are learning that lesson the hard way.

One of the major issues that users are reporting is the fingerprint sensor not working properly. Following the update, it takes significantly longer to unlock the phone using the rear-mounted sensors.

The overall responsiveness of the user interface seems to have slowed down too. Users are having trouble scrolling through most of the apps, while some apps are not even opening. The default SMS app choice also keeps resetting on its own.

Issues such as delayed notifications, UI freezing and crashing, app crashing, rapid battery consumption, and overheating seems to have plagued the two devices. RAM management has also been terrible following the update. For some users, their phone cannot even handle two apps in memory.

The update also seems to have introduced a few one-off issues. A user said that their alarm clock goes off every minute even after it is dismissed. Some users, meanwhile, are saying that Google Maps has stuck on an infinite update loop, essentially rendering it useless.

Clear enough, the Android 10 update has broken a lot of things on Sony Xperia XZ3 and XZ2. You can find a handy list of known issues and workarounds on this Reddit thread.

While a simple restart or hard reset fixes some of the problems, most issues reappear shortly. Running a software repair using the Xperia Companion app doesn’t help either.

Rolling back to Android Pie seems to be the only long term solution at the moment, but that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, of course.

Sony, meanwhile, appears to have suspended the Android 10 rollout for Xperia XZ3 and XZ2. Hopefully, the company will bring a fix for this mess soon.
