ASUS may be utilizing the latest and greatest from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 865 Plus, for its upcoming ROG Phone III.

The successor to the popular ROG Phone II gaming smartphone that released last year may or may not be the first phone to come with this mobile platform. It certainly won’t be the only phone though.

Similar to the Snapdragon 855 Plus, other gaming smartphones in 2020 will also likely use the upcoming mobile platform from Qualcomm.

These are also going to be fairly similar to the Snapdragon 865 which you can find in phones like the Galaxy S20 family. The difference is that they will have gaming-centric features.

The Snapdragon 865 Plus makes the most sense for the ROG Phone III

ASUS may choose to use another processor inside of its upcoming phone. However it would make the most sense to use the Snapdragon 865 Plus.

The Plus model will no doubt be the more gaming-focused platform. And if ASUS wants to keep up with other gaming phone brands that it will be competing against, it’ll need to use this in particular.

The company has not however confirmed what the components inside of the phone will be. So there is always a chance it could use the normal Snapdragon 865.

ASUS is expected to release the ROG Phone III in Q3

It’s rumored that ASUS might end up releasing the ROG Phone III in the third quarter of this year.

This is around the same time that Qualcomm is expected to launch the Snapdragon 865 Plus. If the timing is accurate for both product launches then it would match up for ASUS to use the mobile platform in the upcoming device.

So far ASUS hasn’t mentioned anything about the hardware in the upcoming device. In fact it hasn’t event confirmed the device will be launched. The existence of the device has been confirmed by Qualcomm though.

So the ROG Phone III is coming. It will also use a Snapdragon 865 5G mobile platform of some kind. As this was also confirmed by Qualcomm a couple of weeks ago. Whether or not it will be the standard or the Plus model is unclear.

Whatever the other specs are, they will be at least as powerful as the components in the currently available device. Which means consumers can probably look forward to a display of similar size, as well as the same amount of RAM and storage, and the same battery capacity.
