The OnePlus 8’s MEMC chip will support a number of applications, including YouTube, Netflix, MX Player, Amazon’s Prime Video, VLC, Hotstar, and even the company’s Gallery app (12 overall, including local and global ones).

This information has been confirmed by the company’s CEO. What does this mean, though? Well, MEMC stands for ‘Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation’. It’s a chip that will come built into both OnePlus 8 smartphones it seems.

The OnePlus 8’s MEMC chip will upscale videos

Its goal is to upscale the frame rate of videos, and essentially make them look smoother than they are. It can make low frame rate videos look much smoother on the OnePlus 8 series smartphones.

This chip will be able to upscale videos from 30fps up to 120fps, so that they can take advantage of the 120Hz display. If the OnePlus 8 ends up utilizing a 90Hz display, videos will be upscaled to 90fps, of course.

In order to make this work, OnePlus will also utilize an exclusive algorithm. The whole process is called ‘high frame ecology’ by the company. This upscaling won’t be limited to watching video content, as it will be supported in games as well.

This new MEMC tech from OnePlus is called High Frame 2.0, it seems. OnePlus will, for sure, talk more about that during the press conference that will take place on April 14.

So, it seems like the OnePlus 8’s MEMC chip will be able to do some magic when it comes to upscaling. Speaking of the display, it’s also worth noting that the OnePlus 8 series aced DisplayMate’s tests.

The OnePlus 8 series aced DisplayMate’s tests

The OnePlus 8 series got the highest A+ display rating from the company. The 8 Pro did a bit better, but both are at the very top of the food chain.

The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro will be quite similar on the outside. Both phones will be made out of metal and glass, include curved displays, and a display camera hole in the top-left corner.

The ‘Pro’ model will be larger, and will include an extra camera on the back, though. It will also be the only one to support 30W wireless charging, LPDDR5 RAM, and IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. Do note that these are only rumors at this point, even though the information is coming from reliable sources.

Both phones will be fueled by the Snapdragon 865 SoC, and both will support 5G connectivity. You can expect to see plenty of RAM on both smartphones, along with Android 10.

We still do not know how much will the two phones cost, but OnePlus’ CEO did confirm that they won’t break the $1,000 barrier like many other flagships.
