This time around, we’re comparing the Huawei P40 Pro+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro. These two phones are the most powerful offerings from their respective companies. Both of these phones are quite new, and come with the latest and greatest hardware. There are a lot of differences between the two devices, so it was quite interesting comparing them.
Both of these phones are fairly pricey, and they do have a somewhat similar in-hand feel… even though there are some differences in that area as well. They’re fueled by the different processors, have vastly different software, considerably different camera setups, and so on. There are not many differences between them.
Both devices are quite compelling, though. And both are considered taking into account if you’re planning on buying a new flagship smartphone. That being said, we’ll kick off this comparison by listing their specs, and go from there. We’ll compare their displays, performance, design, and so on. Huawei P40 Pro+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Design
Now, in terms of the design. Both of these phones come with a frame made out of metal, and it may seem like both of them offer a glass back. Well, they do not, the OnePlus 8 Pro has glass on its back, but the P40 Pro+ includes ceramic. That is one of the reasons why it is considerably heavier than the OnePlus 8 Pro. The Huawei P40 Pro+ weighs 226 grams, while the OnePlus 8 Pro weighs 199 grams.
The OnePlus 8 Pro does come with a larger display, and it has a larger footprint in general. It is considerably taller than the P40 Pro+, while it is also wider. The device is thinner than the P40 Pro+, though. Both phones are quite slippery. The Huawei P40 Pro+ is easier to grip due to its smaller size, but it is equally as slippery. The OnePlus 8 Pro is more difficult to use with one hand due to its larger size, but on the other hand, it’s considerably lighter, so hand fatigue will take longer to occur.
Neither of these two phones is great for one-hand use, though, due to their size. Both devices include really thin bezels, and display camera holes. The OnePlus 8 Pro has a single camera hole in the top-left corner. The P40 Pro+ has two, it has a pill-shaped display hole in the same place. Both devices feature curved displays, and fairly large camera modules on the back.
The Huawei P40 Pro+’s camera module is considerably larger, though. It is placed in the top-left corner of the phone’s back, and it incorporates five camera sensors. The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with four rear-facing cameras, and its module does protrude on the back quite a bit. Both devices are quite curvy, and their corners are rounded. If you don’t like the pill-shaped camera hole, the OnePlus 8 Pro is for you. The Huawei P40 Pro+ does look quite sleek all around, though, and it feel just right in the hand.
Huawei P40 Pro+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Display
Both of these phones offer great displays. The Huawei P40 Pro+ comes with a 6.58-inch fullHD+ (2640 x 1200) OLED display, which is curved. The OnePlus 8 Pro also features a curved panel, it includes a 6.78-inch QHD+ (3168 x 1440) Fluid AMOLED display. The Huawei P40 Pro+’s panel offers 90Hz refresh rate, while the OnePlus 8 Pro’s offers 120Hz refresh rate. Both displays support HDR10+ output.
These two displays are both great in real-life, and are more than enough for everyone. Considering that this is a comparison, we have to nitpick a bit. The OnePlus 8 Pro does offer a better display overall. Not only that the OnePlus 8 Pro’s panel offers 120Hz refresh rate, but it also looks better to the naked eye. That 120Hz refresh rate makes everything look so smooth, even though the difference is not huge compared to a 90Hz display.
The colors on the OnePlus 8 Pro’s panel look a bit better, while it’s also a bit sharper. That is not easy to notice, though, and the vast majority of people won’t really see such a difference. Both displays offer really punchy colors, and those blacks are properly deep on both panels. That is not surprising considering that both of these are great OLED panels. So, both displays are more than enough to please pretty much everyone, but the OnePlus 8 Pro’s panel has an advantage.
Huawei P40 Pro+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Performance
Nowadays, pretty much every major flagship offers great performance, as it should be. There are always slight differences in that regard, at the very least. These two devices ship with considerably different hardware, but they’re both plenty powerful for pretty much everyone you can throw at them. The Kirin 990 on the Huawei P40 Pro+ is a great processor, and so is the Snapdragon 865 which is included inside the OnePlus 8 Pro.
Both devices include plenty of RAM, and really well-optimized software. Do note that the Huawei P40 Pro+ does not include Google services, though. Regardless, the phone flies through everything you throw at it, and the same goes for the OnePlus 8 Pro. The two devices will handle web browsing, media consumption, opening apps, multitasking, and even gaming without a problem.
Now, if we had to nitpick a little bit, the OnePlus 8 Pro does seem a bit faster in day-to-day use. OnePlus focused on speed once again, and it shows. That 120Hz panel that is included on the phone only emphasizes the phone’s overall speed. The difference is really small, though, so… for the vast majority of people, it won’t really be noticeable, nor will they care about it.
Huawei P40 Pro+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Battery
You’ll be glad to know that both the Huawei P40 Pro+ and OnePlus 8 Pro are great in terms of battery life. The Huawei P40 Pro+ comes with a 4,200mAh battery, while the OnePlus 8 Pro includes a 4,510mAh battery. The P40 Pro+ does have a smaller display with lower resolution, while it also includes a 90Hz display, not a 120Hz one. So, it is not exactly in a disadvantage when it comes to battery capacity.
Both of these devices will be able to offer over 6.5, 7 hours of screen on time to most of you. That always depends on what you’re doing on your device, but if you’re not gamer, and you don’t download a lot of media, that’s the results you can expect. The Huawei P40 Pro+ will be able to push things a bit further than the OnePlus 8 Pro in most cases. EMUI has always been good with battery life, mainly due to some strict battery drain rules in the background, and that shows. So, the Huawei P40 Pro+ has an advantage in terms of battery life.
The Huawei P40 Pro+ also offers faster charging than the OnePlus 8 Pro. The phone supports 40W fast wired and wireless charging. It also offers considerably faster reverse wireless charging than the OnePlus 8 Pro. So, the Huawei P40 Pro+ does offer more in this regard, though the OnePlus 8 Pro is not far behind, at all.
Huawei P40 Pro+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Cameras
Huawei’s flagship smartphones are well-known for their camera prowess. The same can be said for the Huawei P40 Pro+. OnePlus also did a great job this year, though. The OnePlus 8 Pro is definitely the best camera smartphone the company released, by far. This year, it’s easily able to compete with the best out there, and that includes the Huawei P40 Pro+. Both of these phones are amongst the best camera smartphones in the game.
Now, each of them has its advantages. The Huawei P40 Pro+ is able to pull off slightly more detail than the OnePlus 8 Pro when it comes to daylight shots. The dynamic range is a bit better on the OnePlus 8 Pro, at least in most shots. Macro shots are definitely the OnePlus 8 Pro’s forte, while the Huawei P40 Pro comes with that periscope camera and enables crazy zoom capability. which can come in really handy. That’s not all, though, you do get a true 10x optical zoom with the Huawei P40 Pro+… and that is not something you can find on any other phone.
Utra-wide cameras are great on both devices, no doubt about that. Images turn out a bit more vivid on the OnePlus 8 Pro, while the Huawei P40 Pro+ offers more true-to-life shots. Night modes are great on both smartphones, they truly are. The Huawei P40 Pro+ offers you more options when it comes to balancing such shots, but both of them are able to pull some amazing low light shots. Video is slightly more stable on the OnePlus 8 Pro, and we prefer it because of it. Both of these phones are amazing in terms of camera quality, it all depends on what feature you need the most. Both companies did great in terms of cameras, and are amongst the best camera smartphones in the market, no doubt about that.
Huawei P40 Pro+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Audio
You’ll be glad to know that these two phones offer great audio as well. Both devices include stereo speakers, and really solid out in general. Those speakers are quite loud, and sharp as well. They offer some bass, while the distortion is barely noticeable at the highest possible volume. Speakers on both phones are amongst the best on the market at the moment. Not the best, but they’re up there.
In terms of audio via headphones. You can use either Bluetooth headphones, or utilize the Type-C port at the bottom. The sound is really good. They both offer some bass, and the highs are better on the OnePlus 8 Pro, while mids are a bit better on the P40 Pro+. Lows are quite comparable. All in all, the audio is great, as long as you have a proper set of earphones / headphones that you can use.
