ASUS’ next-generation Zenfone 7 flagship series will continue the company’s tradition of using mechanical flip cameras. But the company will also be packing in more lenses to improve the experience, according to recent reports.

ASUS has used flip cameras in the past, well before the Zenfone 7. In fact, that’s been among the series’ top features. The flip mechanism allows the flagship’s primary snappers to also be used as the selfie snapper.

No new details have been provided with regard to exactly what sensors might be used but the dual-camera arrangement of the Zenfone 6 will reportedly be replaced. Or, at the very least, more sensors will be included. The ASUS Zenfone 6 utilized a 48-megapixel primary snapper and a 13-megapixel, 125-degree field of view wide-angle snapper.

So it’s not outside reason to assume that the new camera array will also include a telephoto lens. Given the current trend in smartphones, ASUS may also include a dedicated depth sensor. That would take the total number of cameras to four from the standard two.

Finally, ASUS will undoubtedly bolster the main cameras with new sensors that deliver a higher megapixel-rating too.

Aside from rumors about cameras, what else is known about Zenfone 7?

Previous leaks about the ASUS Zenfone 7, looking past its cameras, have hinted at a gadget powered by the Snapdragon 865. That’s based on a benchmark listing and statements made by Qualcomm. But the benchmark also showed that processor in this Android 10 handset as being backed by a massive 16GB RAM. Wi-Fi 6 support and the latest in Bluetooth connectivity are expected too, based on those same statements.

When is Zenfone 7 expected to hit shelves?

ASUS is presently expected to provide details about the latest Zenfone series just after it launches its next-gen gaming phone. That’s the ASUS ROG Phone 3, expected to launch on July 22. But there is some extra detail available for the Zenfone series too. The ASUS Zenfone 7 is expected to launch in a standard edition and a “Pro” variant, just for starters.

It’s also expected to ship in a black or white color variation. But it isn’t immediately clear whether those will be standard colors or lean toward gradients, iridescence, or have other special overlays.
