Today, T-Mobile held its latest Uncarrier event, via a webcast, where the company’s CEO Mike Sievert unveiled Scam Shield.
Scam Shield is the company’s newest product that is going to take on unwanted robocalls, by using an unparalleled series of bold solutions to protect T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile and Sprint customers.
T-Mobile also made sure to take a dig at the competitors, by noting that AT&T and Verizon make millions each year by charging for protection. But T-Mobile is going to offer it to all of its customers for free.
What is Scam Shield?
Scam Shield is a series of complex products that are all provided into one product. It’s going to bring you free Scam ID and Blocking, free Enhanced Caller ID, free Second Number, free Number Change, Free Scam Shield App and Free Be ID Aware Service.
The enhanced caller ID is going to let you know who’s calling, as you’d expect. And it will come with some improvements, so you’ll know if the number is verified as coming from a real person or business.
What’s interesting here is with the free second number, T-Mobile is introducing PROXY. Which is a second number so you can keep your personal number, well personal. And you also get a free number change. So if your number becomes a spam magnet, you can get a clean slate with a new number.
Now, the Scam Shield app is going to be the central place to activate all of these new protections and, for an extra charge, unlock more advanced call controls. Sprint customers will get their Call Screener app updated, and it will now be free. Sprint used to charge for this. And finally with Be ID Aware Service, you’ll get ID monitoring and alerts for 12 months from McAfee.
This continues T-Mobile’s war on spam calls
T-Mobile was the first carrier to really take steps towards combating these spam and robocalls, and it is now 30% better than competing networks at detecting these calls. And thus blocking them.
With today’s announcements, they are about to get even better.
But why is T-Mobile so interested in blocking these calls? Well, because that what the customers want. The number one complaint to the FCC is about spam and robocalls. And working to eliminate them is something the FCC is pushing for – not just with T-Mobile, but all carriers. They are annoying and need to go away. So it’s good to see T-Mobile stepping up with Scam Shield.
