ASUS has announced its new flagship smartphones, the ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro. These are the two phones that were rumored to arrive today, and that’s exactly what happened.

The company announced the two phones during an event in Taiwan, its homeland. The ASUS ZenFone 7 devices continue the ZenFone 6’s legacy, and include a flip camera setup.

These two phones are actually quite similar, though there are some differences. The vanilla model comes with an inferior SoC, though only barely, and it also offers less RAM and storage.

The ASUS ZenFone 7 & 7 Pro are quite similar, with several differences

The two phones do look the same, though, and share a lot of their specs. So, let’s first talk about the differences, and then we’ll list what they have in common.

The ASUS ZenFone 7 is fueled by the Snapdragon 865. The ‘Pro’ model, on the other hand, comes with the Snapdragon 865 Plus. The difference between these two SoCs is minimal, they’re both considered to be Qualcomm’s flagship offerings.

The ZenFone 7 comes with 6GB or 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and 128GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage. The ZenFone 7 Pro, on the flip side, includes 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Both phones offer storage expansion, by the way, up to 2TB. It is also worth noting that they do differ in the camera department a bit, more on that later.

Both of these smartphones feature the same display. You’ll find a 6.67-inch fullHD+ (2400 x 1080) AMOLED display on both phones. Both of those displays offer a 90Hz refresh rate, and both are flat.

A 5,000mAh battery can be found inside both devices, which is a good battery size for this display size and refresh rate. The phone also supports 30W ASUS HyperCharge fast charging, 27W Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0, and USB Power Deliver 3.0. Wireless charging is not included.

Both phones include a side-facing fingerprint scanner. That is your regular capacitive fingerprint scanner, which ASUS opted for over an in-display fingerprint scanner.

These two phones offer the exact same flip camera setup

You’ll find the same camera setup on both devices. Both phones come with a 64-megapixel main camera (4-in-1 pixel binning, Sony’s IMX686 sensor, f/1.8 aperture, 0.8um pixel size, PDAF, EIS. OIS is included in Pro model only), backed by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide unit (Sony’s IMX363 sesor, 113-degree FoV, f/2.2 aperture, Dual PDAF, 4cm macro photography), and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera (3x optical zoom, 12x total zoom, f/2.4 aperture. Pro variant has OIS).

Those three camera sensors serve as both the phone’s front and rear-facing cameras. They’ll naturally sit on the back, as rear-facing units. Once you switch to the selfie camera in the camera app, though, they’ll flip up, and become front-facing cameras.

Android 10 comes pre-installed on this smartphone, along with ASUS’ ZenUI 7. ASUS’ software is quite clean, it’s very close to stock Android, with some of the company’s additions.

These two devices measure 165.08 x 77.28 x 9.6mm. They each weight 230 grams, so they’re not exactly one of the lightest phones around. The two phones have been announced in Aurora Black and Pastel White color options.

The ASUS ZenFone 7 is priced at the equivalent of $750 in Taiwan, while the ‘Pro’ model starts at $950. It remains to be seen what will their price tags be elsewhere, but they’ll probably be more affordable outside of Taiwan. These two phones are expected to launch in a number of markets all over the world.
