Samsung will offer up to 3 generations of Android upgrades for several of its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The company first made the announcement during the Galaxy Note20 launch without giving much clarification. Today’s press release sheds more light on its update policy and mentions all the Galaxy devices eligible for receiving 3 Android OS updates.

For the other Galaxy devices, the company said to provide the latest Android OS upgrades until the hardware specifications allow. Mostly, they will be receiving just two major Android OS updates. At least in the mid-range and flagship categories, Samsung now stays on par Google with this new update policy.

All future Galaxy flagships are eligible for 3 Android OS updates

Prior to this, Samsung only promised two major OS updates for all its smartphones. As far as the flagship Galaxy smartphones and tablets are considered, all the future devices will be receiving three years of Android upgrades. It also applies to all the flagship smartphones launched in 2019 and 2020 under the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series.

All the Galaxy Tab S6 and Tab S7 tablets along with the upcoming Galaxy Tab S tablets will get three years of support. However, the Galaxy A series does include a caveat. According to Samsung, only select upcoming Galaxy A smartphones will be eligible for receiving three OS updates.

Below is the list of all the previously launched Samsung smartphones & tablets eligible for three OS upgrades:

  • Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, S20 Ultra, S20+ 5G, S20+, S20 5G, S20 in addition to S10 5G, S10+, S10, S10e, and S10 Lite
  • Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Note20 Ultra, Note20 5G, Note20, Note10+ 5G, Note10+, Note10 5G, Note10, and Note10 Lite
  • Galaxy Z Fold2 5G, Z Fold2, Z Flip 5G, Z Flip, Fold 5G, and Fold
  • Galaxy A71 5G, A71, A51 5G, A51, and A90 5G
  • Galaxy Tab S7+ 5G, Tab S7+, Tab S7 5G3, Tab S7, Tab S6 5G4, Tab S6, and Tab S6 Lite

Samsung Galaxy S20 series will be the first to receive Android 11 update

With up to three generations of Android OS upgrades, the company is trying to extend the lifecycle of these Galaxy smartphones. Finally, Samsung also acknowledged that people are holding onto their devices for longer.

Furthermore, the Galaxy S20 series will be the first from Samsung to receive the upcoming Android 11 update. While the rollout begins later this year, there will be a different ETA for the carrier-locked devices.
