Sony has announced a new smartphone, the Xperia 8 Lite. This handset got announced in the company’s homeland, Japan, and it’s actually quite odd. Why? Well, because it has almost the same specs as the Xperia 10.

That wouldn’t be so weird if the Xperia 10 didn’t launch in February 2019, which was quite some time ago. The main difference between the two phones (and the only one we’ve spotted) is in the camera department.

The Sony Xperia 8 Lite does include a better camera setup compared to the Xperia 10

The Sony Xperia 8 Lite includes a 12-megapixel (f/1.8 aperture) main camera, backed by an 8-megapixel (f/2.4 aperture) secondary camera. The Xperia 10, on the other hand, comes with a 13-megapixel (f/2.0 aperture) main camera, and a 5-megapixel (f/2.4 aperture) depth sensor.

We still do not know what is the main purpose of that secondary 8-megapixel snapper on the Xperia 8 Lite. We don’t know if it’s an ultrawide camera, or something else entirely. Based on the marketing materials, it could be a depth sensor.

Speaking of cameras, an 8-megapixel unit (f/2.0 aperture) sits on the phone’s front side. This handset also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a Type-C USB port on the bottom.

The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 630 64-bit octa-core processor. That is a 14nm processor that Qualcomm launched over three years ago. Needless to say, it’s an old SoC at this point.

The phone sports a large display, and not the latest version of Android

A 6-inch fullHD+ LCD display sits on the phone’s front side, and it offers a 21:9 aspect ratio. A 2,870mAh battery is also included in this phone, while Android 9 Pie will come pre-installed on the device. Yes, you read that right, no Android 10 here.

The phone includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, while it comes in Black and White color variants. In terms of the design, well, it looks just like the Xperia 10.

You’ll notice a pill-shaped dual camera setup on the back, while an LED flash sits right above those cameras. Sony’s branding is included on the back, and the same goes for Xperia branding as well.

This phone has a rather large forehead. That top bezel is considerably thicker than all other bezels on this smartphone. The device includes a flat display, by the way.

The phone is priced at JPY29,800 in Japan, which translates to $280. This handset almost certainly won’t arrive to other markets, as it seems to be one of those Japan-exclusive launches.
