A new Twitter post shows that Google is working to bring an app-wide dark mode theme for Google Maps. Well, last month, the Google Home received the same treatment.
And now it was finally the time for Google Maps to receive dark mode feature. Notably, Dark Mode was one of the key features of Android 10 OS. However, it was Google that took too long to bring this feature to its apps.
Finally, with Google Maps, the dark mode feature will now be available on all the Google first-party apps. But one thing to note is that Google’s dark mode is more of a grey mode, as it has a slight greyish tint instead of being pitch dark.
According to the new post, Google is working in bringing dark mode throughout all the menus of Google Maps. A part of the Google Maps already has the dark mode enabled.
But this implementation will bring a dark mode to the entire app. This piece of information comes from developer and leaker Alessandro Paluzzi.
This means that the dark mode for Maps has not gone live for all the users. It is still under a server-side test and should be soon available to the masses.
Google Maps dark mode can orientate itself to the system settings
Just like other apps, in order to enable dark mode in the app, you can either force enable this feature or let it orientate itself to system settings.
Basically, it will enable the dark mode if you have a system-wide dark mode enabled on your smartphone. Under the Settings menu, there is an Appearance option.
This is unlike the Google Home app, where Google did not provide an option to go back to the Light theme. Which is understandable as there would be millions like me who prefer to keep their devices in Dark Mode always.
Here users can select from three options, Light theme, Dark theme, and Default to device theme. This feature could be very useful as in my opinion half of the population (slight exaggeration!) of this planet depends on Google Maps for navigation.
And that blinding light theme is too much to take for the eyes while driving or navigating at night. The texts and other in-app icons are also tinted to match the dark accent of the dark mode.
There is no official confirmation as to when this new dark mode feature will be available for the users. But we expect it to arrive soon for the users. We will keep our eyes on the lookout for any further developments in this regard.
