Sony has launched two smartphones this year powered by the Snapdragon 865 SoC — Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 II. Now, the leaks about the next-gen Xperia 1 smartphone have started popping up online. According to AndroidNext, the Xperia 1 III will sport a slightly improved display and a wider front camera.

Going by the previous Sony flagship launches, the Xperia 1 III should launch in February 2021 during the MWC event. Since the MWC 2021 is now postponed until late June 2021, Sony might continue to unveil in February instead of waiting for the MWC to happen in June.

The upcoming Xperia 1 III could fix the low brightness issue of its 4K OLED display

Speaking of the leaked information, the Xperia 1 III display is mentioned to offer 15 percent higher brightness than its predecessor. While the company might use an improved panel, it could still offer 4K resolution and a tall 21:9 aspect ratio.

Additionally, Sony should also include the actual high refresh rate support instead of motion blur reduction. The Xperia 1 II with a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED display comes with creator mode “powered by CineAlta” that supports professional-level color reproduction standards like DCI-P3 100%, BT.202014 color space, and D65 White Point.

Coming to the selfie camera, the Xperia 1 III will reportedly come with a wider aperture for improving the performance. However, there is no information about the sensor size and resolution as of now. The 8MP front camera on the Xperia 1 II came with a 1/4-inch sensor size and f/2.0 aperture.

To sport a wider selfie camera for an improved low-light performance

The new Xperia 1 III could sport an 8MP sensor with f/1.8 or f/1.6 aperture. The wide aperture will allow more light to reach the image sensor. Hence, it will improve the performance of the sensor mainly in the low-light conditions. Also, the wide aperture offers a shallow depth of field.

Under the hood, the device will come powered by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 mobile platform. In terms of design, there shouldn’t be any major changes. It will continue to come with the super-tall design and a bunch of physical buttons on the right edge.

Compared to its predecessor, the Xperia 1 III should also sport larger camera sensors on the rear with more pixels to improve the overall camera performance. The $1,200 Xperia 1 II supports super-fast autofocus technology capable of 20 fps continuous burst shooting.

It also offers eye autofocus that works on both humans and animals. The Xperia 1 II is also the company’s first-ever 5G smartphone. Unlike in other markets, the device doesn’t support 5G in the US.
