Snapchat has finally allowed users to send music with their snaps on the platform. As reported by Engadget, this move has been a long time coming and brings the app more in line with Instagram and TikTok.
Snapchat rarely adds significant new features to the platform. The company generally seems more content to stick with the tried and tested formula rather than change things up. The only changes we generally see are additions like voter awareness tools and other relevant innovations.
We first heard of this new feature back in August, Snapchat promised to bring the innovation to us in the fall. It appears to have kept that promise with it now rolling out to users.
Snapchat introduces ‘Sounds’ feature
Snapchat has named the feature ‘sounds’ which will allow users to send music along with their snaps. The feature further brings Snapchat into line with the likes of Instagram and TikTok.
Essentially, this feature allows users to add songs that will play alongside their posts. This is something that users have cried out for now for a while but only now has Snapchat delivered.
The feature operates in a very similar way to Instagram’s music feature. This is hardly surprising given that this looks to be a move to try move in on what TikTok has been doing.
Right now, there are only a few tracks available. Although, one of them is a new Justin Bieber claiming to be a ‘Snapchat exclusive’. It will be interesting if this idea of exclusive songs to social media platforms is something that will continue as more platforms gain this type of functionality.
For now, the music choice on Snapchat is way less exhaustive compared to Instagram or TikTok. However, the company claims to have struck a number of multi-year deals with labels. This means the catalog should grow substantially in the near future.
At the moment it looks as if the feature has rolled out to all iOS users. However, there has been no word on the status for Android. Not great news for us non-iPhone users but hopefully this will be resolved in the near future.
In other news, Snapchat is also working on a new feature that will allow users to add their own audio to snaps. Again this is another innovation that seems rather TikTok-like as it looks like Snapchat wants to muscle in on their success. The company says that this new feature will be available “in the coming months”.
