T-Mobile OnePlus 8T Finally Gets Always-On Display Feature

The T-Mobile carrier variant of the OnePlus 8T, which it calls the OnePlus 8T+ 5G, was surprisingly missing the Always-On Display (AOD) feature out of the box. The carrier earlier this month said that the feature would be added with a software update in December. Well, the said update has arrived early and it does bring AOD.

The so-called OnePlus 8T+ 5G is receiving a new update with the firmware version 11.0.4.6.KB09CB. According to the changelog, this update introduces the AOD feature to the device. Additionally, it also optimizes the battery performance and fixes the bugs that were causing the device to freeze or overheat.

The new firmware bundles the October 2020 Android security patch and also fixes a Bluetooth audio issue. It is a 320MB download over the air (OTA). You should get a notification once the update becomes available for your OnePlus 8T+ 5G. Note that OTA updates are released in batches and may not be available for all eligible devices simultaneously.

T-Mobile OnePlus 8T gets Always-On Display with the latest update

OnePlus finally introduced the Always-On Display feature to its devices with the Android 11-based OxygenOS 11. The OnePlus 8T, which debuted with the latest version of the company’s custom Android skin, was the first device to get this feature.

However, the T-Mobile carrier variant of the phone was still missing this much-awaited feature out of the box. It reminded us of a similar instance last year when the T-Mobile OnePlus 7 Pro was missing DC dimming for a few months. Now, after a slight delay, the OnePlus 8T+ 5G is finally getting AOD as well.

If you didn’t already know, T-Mobile calls this phone OnePlus 8T+ 5G simply because the carrier has obtained an IP certification for it. The T-Mobile variant of the phone comes with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, while the unlocked variant doesn’t.

That said, both phones offer the same level of protection against dust and water. Just that the T-Mobile variant holds an official certification, giving assurance to the customers. Apart from the missing AOD (not anymore) and an official IP68 rating, T-Mobile’s OnePlus 8T+ 5G is the same handset as the unlocked variant. And as we concluded in our review, it is an excellent phone.

Earlier this week, OnePlus rolled out a new update to the unlocked OnePlus 8T with tons of optimizations and enhancements. However, as always is the case with the carrier variants, this update will not likely hit T-Mobile’s OnePlus 8T+ 5G until next month. For now, look forward to this “AOD” update if you haven’t already received it.
