Samsung launched the Galaxy S21 series back in January. These devices come with a plethora of new features. However, in a recent official blog post, Samsung highlighted the AI capabilities of the Galaxy S21 series to enhance portrait shots.
Along with the cameras, the post-processing capabilities on smartphones are also evolving and continuing to get better. Thanks to the AI, anyone, even a beginner can take perfect snapshots from their Galaxy S21 devices.

The AI technology used in the Galaxy S21 lineup provides the user with pro-grade tools to ensure every moment captured is epic. Talking about selfies, the process is pretty straightforward.
An image taken using the front-facing camera of Galaxy S21, first goes through a process called Segmentation. Here, the software first, identifies the face and then segments or marks them for further processing.
Second, the AI naturally enhances the details in facial features including hair, eyes, etc. The software then automatically adjusts the white balance to bring out the natural skin tone, even in harsh lighting conditions.

One thing is for sure, after watching several reviews on YouTube and personal testing, I can say that Galaxy S21 devices capture arguably the best portrait photos currently on a smartphone.
Samsung has explained in detail, the process of how the AI capabilities and the camera lenses on the Galaxy S21 series produce such good quality portrait shots.
Just like selfies, the portrait photos taken via Galaxy S21 camera lenses go through the segmentation process. It lets the software differentiate which parts of the image are humans, pets, or background.
Segmentation also helps in detecting whether the image has a singular person or a group of people at different depth levels.
Identification of all the elements of the image helps AI to accurately process the images when needed. Basically, this segmentation map helps in creating the seed map to properly apply the effects to enhance the details.
After this, the software then adds a tri-map over the seed map. This helps in identifying the subject, background, and all the other elements of the image.
Later, the matte-map is applied on top of the tri-map which keeps the hair and other facial features from blending into the background. It is the matte-map that enables Galaxy S21 devices to capture natural portrait shots.
Finally, the depth estimation calculates the distance between object and background to apply the depth-of-field effect.
