Motorola is finally starting to push Android 11 to its latest flagship, the Moto Edge+. The device is currently picking up the new update on Verizon’s network, complete with the March 2021 Android security patch. Verizon’s website has yet to reflect the update but according to a Droidlife report, Android 11 is hitting the Moto Edge+ phones with build number RPB31.Q1-19-19-11-2.
This update should bring all the goodies that are part and parcel of the Android 11 software. Support for chat bubbles, a conversations section in the notifications shade, enhanced privacy controls, and quick access to smart home controls on long-pressing the power button are some of the new features.
The latest update also reportedly fixes some major bugs on the Moto Edge+. Most notably, Android 11 introduces a fix for this annoying bug where users couldn’t place calls or connect to data while using Verizon’s 5G network.
Moreover, there should be some add-ons from Motorola as well. Back in December last year, reports emerged that the Lenovo-owned company is preparing a Samsung DeX-like desktop mode for its smartphones. Since the Moto Edge+ is a flagship model, it should be compatible with this new feature. We don’t have a changelog available as yet to confirm this though.
Moto Edge+ picks Android 11 on Verizon
Motorola isn’t known for rolling out fast software updates to its phones. The Lenovo-owned phone brand usually arrives late to the party and this year has been no exception. In December last year, the company did reveal its Android 11 plans, confirming the update for over 20 smartphones. Motorola said it will begin rolling out Android 11 “starting in the coming months, pending partner support.”
We expected the rollout to begin latest by February this year but it was seemingly a too big ask for the company. Now, six months after the initial release of Android 11 back in September 2020, Motorola is finally starting to update its devices with the latest software. Earlier this week, the company pushed Android 11 to the Moto G8 and G8 Power. Now it’s time for its latest flagship, the Moto Edge+, to pick up the new update.
Motorola’s lackluster software support standards are not unknown. However, this is still not a great showing for the company. A phone that costs $1,000; a phone that marked its re-entry into the flagship arena should not be kept this long waiting for a major Android OS update. This is, in fact, the first software update in three months for the Moto Edge+.
Motorola still has about 20 phones pending the Android 11 update, including the non-Plus Edge as well as the costlier foldable Moto Razr. It now remains to be seen how long the company keeps these phones waiting for the big update.
