OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 9 series will feature a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. In fact, the company confirmed what sensor will it use exactly. OnePlus will utilize the IMX766 camera sensor from Sony.
This sensor will accompany the Sony IMX789, which will be used as the phone’s main camera sensor. The ultra-wide one will come with a considerably wider field-of-view, thanks to a different lens.

Do note that the OnePlus 9 series is mentioned for the IMX766 camera sensors, but it won’t arrive on all three devices. OnePlus is rumored to announce the OnePlus 9, 9 Pro, and 9R on March 23. That date is confirmed, by the way.
The OnePlus 9 Pro will almost certainly utilize this ultra-wide unit, while we’re not sure about the OnePlus 9. The OnePlus 9R almost certainly will not use that camera sensor, but we’ll see.
The ‘Pro’ model has to differentiate from its siblings somehow, and with the OnePlus 8 series, the main difference was the camera setup. Chances are the same will happen with the OnePlus 9 Pro as well.

That device is said to feature a quad camera setup. A 48-megapixel main camera will be backed by a 50-megapixel ultra-wide one. In addition to that, the phone is also rumored to offer an 8-megapixel telephoto camera (3.3x zoom), and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Do note that the latter two haven’t been confirmed yet.
What’s interesting here, however, is OnePlus’ partnership with Hasselblad. The company announced a 3-year partnership with a well-known camera company. It remains to be seen how will that reflect on the company’s flagships.
OnePlus is hyping up its OnePlus 9 series cameras quite a bit, so it remains to be seen what we’ll get. All three phones are expected to launch on March 23, along with the OnePlus Watch which has been rumored for a while now.
