Sonos has finally made the Roam official. The Sonos Roam is the company’s newest and second portable speaker. It’s much smaller than the Sonos Move, but still offers some incredible audio quality.

Much like the Sonos Move, the Roam also supports both Bluetooth and WiFi. Allowing you to use it on the go, but also still connect it to your existing Sonos ecosystem in your home. Thanks to a new feature called “Sound Swap” you can press and hold the play/pause button on the speaker to switch to another speaker in your home. It also unlocks Bluetooth connectivity for your entire Sonos setup.

Audio quality is still very impressive on the Roam. Thanks to it sporting two Class-H Amplifiers, a custom Racetrack Mid-Woofer, and a Tweeter inside. That Racetrack Mid-Woofer is able to ensure playback of mid-range frequencies and maximizes low-end output. Like the rest of the Sonos speakers, there is also an adjustable EQ included, to adjust the treble, bass and the loudness of the speaker.

Sonos Roam is still a smart speaker

The Roam is still a smart speaker, and has support for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. There’s also a microphone button on the top, which can be used for turning off the microphone.

Apple’s AirPlay 2 is included, as well as support for the Sonos app of course. Which means that you can listen to Sonos Radio on this speaker. Unfortunately, Chromecast is still not supported on the Roam speaker.

Of course, the Roam is also water-resistant, with a IP67 rating. So you can take it to the beach, on a bike ride through the rain and even in the shower. Without ruining the Roam. Which is rather impressive.

Battery life on the Roam is pretty impressive for it’s size. We’re looking at 10 hours of continuous playback. And it can last up to 10 days in standby.

Speaking of battery life, the Sonos Roam does charge via a USB-C cable and can use any Qi wireless charger. The charging dock will be available for $49.99, but it is not required to charge the Roam, unlike the Move where you can only use the dock to charge it. It’s good to see it using both USB-C and Qi wireless charging on the Roam.

When will the Roam be available?

Pre-orders for Roam open today, and it’ll be available on April 20. And it’ll cost $169.

Pre-orders are available on Sonos.com right now, and other retailers will open pre-orders later this month.

Much like the other Sonos speakers, the Roam is available in two colors: Lunar White and Shadow Black.
