Sony has a leg up though. Sony has camera experience. Its Alpha series of cameras are some of the best money can buy. The Alpha team brings their expertise in cameras over to the Mark III smartphones as it did with the Mark II flagships last year.
Sony went to the Alpha team to get optical, software, and image quality engineers to make the camera the best it can be. The team was tasked with developing a similar experience to the Alpha cameras that professionals would love to use.

The Sony Xperia 1 III features Real-Time Tracking which comes from the fantastic Alpha line. Real-Time Tracking works by using AI. The AI tracks objects. However, it isn’t perfect, unfortunately. It can get confusing and may have trouble distinguishing between two similar things.
In order to help the AI, the Sony Xperia 1 III has a 3D Time of Flight sensor. Depth information that the 3D ToF sensor catches gives AI the ability to distinguish between similar subjects. This is what will help the AI tell things apart.
The cameras aim to give professionals like sports photographers the tools they need. For example, sports photographers need a camera that can track -fast-moving objects. As a result of these needs, the camera has a dual focal length telephoto lens.
Sony’s new Xperia III flagships have powerful cameras. But, only time will tell if their cameras will be able to usurp the current smartphone camera champion.
