HMD Global has taken the opportunity afforded by today’s Google I/O 2021 announcements to unveil a new Android 12 developer program for its upcoming Nokia X20. Arranged in partnership with Google, the program effectively allows the Nokia X20 to enroll from the very first Android 12 beta release. Developers will then be able to provide valuable feedback that will shape the future of the OS on Nokia handsets.
Here’s how this works and how can developers get involved with Android 12 on Nokia X20
Of course, the new program is going to work via the Nokia phones community forum. And, through that platform, HMD Global says that developers will be able to not only provide feedback. But also to collaborate and share ideas and tips with others. That’s in addition to communicating directly with HMD Global’s own in-house development team. With the latter interactions available in no fewer than 16 languages.
Moreover, HMD Global says that developers should be able to register for the Nokia X20 Android 12 program via ‘all Nokia smartphones’. And, while not clarified, has some potential implications. Namely, developers won’t necessarily have to wait to get their hands on the Nokia X20 before getting signed up to participate.
The end-goal isn’t just to the benefit of developers, either. Instead, the company says that it will be making broader use of those interactions. Specifically, by utilizing the “broad geographical user base and diverse cultures” to help “fine-tune” the upcoming Android version for end-users. That means that developers will directly impact on how Android is presented on Nokia handsets going forward.
When will this program actually be available on Nokia X20?
Now, as noted above, developers don’t have to wait to sign up in order to participate. But HMD Global also provided a narrower timeline with regard to exactly when the program will be avaliable on the Nokia X20 too. The company says that developers can start trying out Android 12 with the mid-range Nokia X20 starting from Q3 2021.
