For years, we’ve heard rumors that Google would be opening its own retail store, many thought it would be in Chicago. But today, Google made it official. It is opening its first retail store in New York City, later this summer.
Now, Google does already have a physical store at its Mountain View headquarters. Though, that is more of a Google swag store, with t-shirts, mugs, and stuff like that. This store will have Google products. As the company notes in its blog post, customers will be able to purchase Pixel smartphones, Nest smart home devices, Fitbit trackers, Pixelbooks and much more.
Essentially, it’s an Apple Store, but with Google products.
Google will also allow customers to purchase online and pick up their products in-store. Like just about every other retailer does.
Google Store opening in Chelsea this summer
Google is essentially using the first floor of its already existing office building in Chelsea, for this store. At least that’s what the renders look like. Which is pretty smart for Google, since it already owns the space. And it’s in a pretty central area of New York City. Which is on 8th Ave between 15th and 16th St.
There’s no word on when exactly the store will open, but it could be as soon as June 21, or as late as September 21. But one thing is for sure, it should be open before the next Pixel smartphone is announced. And we’re talking the Pixel 6, not the Pixel 5a.
Google is going to allow customers to try out their products in the store, but will still be taking COVID-19 precautions, at least for the foreseeable future. Which means it will be limiting the number of customers that are allowed in. Also regularly cleaning the store, and requiring that guests wear masks.
It’s an exciting time, and will be interesting to see what this store looks like, and when we’ll see additional locations.
