Samsung has started mass producing the smallest 50MP image sensor in the world dubbed, Samsung ISOCELL JN1. The South Korean tech behemoth has broken new grounds with the mass production of what can be described as the industry’s first 0.64-micrometer pixel image sensor.

Samsung adopted the Double Super PDAF, Smart-ISO, enhanced ISOCELL 2.0, and various other latest pixel technologies for the 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN1. It is likely to capture more vivid images on the world’s first 0.64-micrometer (μm)-pixel image sensor.

Moreover, it supports up to an impressive 4K resolution video recording at 60 FPS (frames-per-second) or full HD at 240 FPS.

Samsung ISOCELL JN1 employs cutting edge technology

The JN1 uses ISOCELL 2.0 technology. Furthermore, it has additional enhancements that enable improved light sensitivity by about 16 percent.

The sensor uses Samsung’s four-to-one pixel binning technology called Tetrapixel in low-light environments. Tetrapixel combines four adjacent 0.64-micrometer pixels into one big 1.28-micrometer pixel to improve light sensitivity fourfold for brighter 12.5Mp photos.

This entire tech is housed in a small 1/2.76-inch optical format. Samsung claims that the ISOCELL JN1 is the company’s versatile image sensor so far.

The ISOCELL JN1 is compatible with the existing 1/2.8-inch products. In other words, the sensor can serve as a front shooter, telephoto camera, as well as ultra-wide camera. It can be used as a standard wide camera.

As a result, users will be able to capture highly detailed group pictures or selfies in 50MP resolution. On top of that, they can record high-resolution video at high-zoom ratios and up to 4K resolution.

What else can Samsung’s ISOCELL JN1 do?

The smaller sensor brings the height of the camera setup down by about 10 percent. This is quite impressive since reducing the camera bulge paves the way for a slimmer and streamlined design in upcoming smartphones.

Furthermore, the Samsung ISOCELL JN1 has Smart-ISO that improves dynamic range. Smart-ISO employs Low ISO mode to retain even minor details in bright settings. It reduces readout noise in low-lit environments with the help of High ISO.

The JN1 uses Smart-ISO to offer inter-scene HDR when the light setting is neither too bright nor dark. In addition to that, it combines enhanced Double Super PD to speed up auto-focus.

Double Super PD increases the density of pixels (1/16) than Super PD (1/32) by two times. This comes in handy during phase detection. Even in an environment that is about 60 percent lesser lit, it ensures the same auto-focus performance.
