NBCUniversal’s video streaming service Peacock is now available on Samsung TVs. Users of Samsung’s Tizen OS-powered smart TVs can now download the Peacock app to access the latter’s vast content library. It offers on-demand movies, shows, and originals as well as live news and sports programming. Comcast subsidiary NBCUniversal owns Peacock, which is named after NBC’s logo.

This rollout comes just in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The latest edition of the Summer Olympics is scheduled to be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan, after it was postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. NBCUniversal reportedly plans to broadcast a record 7,000 hours of programming from the mega sporting event, with Peacock airing a series of live shows daily throughout the Olympics. So its availability on Samsung TVs means more people will be watching those shows. Moreover, DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby: Family Business will also premiere exclusively on Peacock this summer.

“Just in time for the Olympics, our partnership with Peacock also means Samsung users will now have more ways to access and enjoy the Tokyo Games,” said Salek Brodsky, a Vice President at Samsung.

Peacock offers three tiers of plans. There’s an ad-supported free plan that offers around 7,500 hours of programming. The $5/month Premium plan comes with limited ads and boasts 10,000 hours of programming. It adds live sports and news over the free plan. Lastly, the $10/month Premium Plus plan lets you access the whole library ad-free.

As of March 31, 2021, Peacock had 42 million sign-ups, one-third of which were active users. However, it’s unclear how many of those are paid users.

Peacock now available on Samsung smart TVs

Launched in July 2020, Peacock is one of the newest video streaming services on the block. The company has been gradually expanding its availability since its launch. Over the past year, it has arrived on various platforms including Android, Android TV, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, Xbox, PlayStation, iOS, iPadOS, Xfinity X1, Flex, Vizio, and WebOS. Now, Peacock has arrived on Samsung’s Tizen OS as well. After all, the Korean giant is the No. 1 maker of smart TVs around the world, so it was only a matter of time.

“Samsung is a powerful platform and we are excited to bring Peacock to millions of their dedicated streamers across the country,” said Maggie McLean Suniewick, President of business development and partnerships at Peacock. “From the world premiere of The Boss Baby: Family Business to the Tokyo Olympics, Samsung users will now enjoy seamless access to many of the biggest programming events of the year, as well Peacock’s massive catalog of the best movies, TV shows, news, and sports.”

Peacock is still missing from Amazon’s FireTV lineup though. However, with Tokyo Olympics coming near, the two parties may accelerate talks to bring the service to FireTV devices soon. We’ll let you know if and when that happens.
