OPPO Could Be Working On A Gaming Smartphone

OPPO could be the next big name to launch a gaming smartphone. An unannounced phone from the Chinese phone maker has been recently spotted on the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and it strongly resembles recent gaming-oriented smartphones such as the ASUS ROG Phone 5 and the Lenovo Legion 2 Pro.

The listing does not feature the device’s name or even model number. In fact, there’s no information at all apart from some renders. However, the renders appear to be quite convincing and do reveal a few things about the handset.

To begin with, this OPPO device does feature those unique dual-tone patterns on the back panel that we have come to see in all gaming smartphones lately. The patterns extend to the frame as well. There’s a circular ring at the center that could double up a capacitive button used for gaming purposes. The renders also reveal a quad-camera setup at the back.

Additionally, we can see the power button on the right edge and the volume rockers on the left. Cutouts for a 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone, USB Type-C port, and a speaker grille can be seen at the bottom. There’s also a second microphone at the top.

It’s a standard-looking phone from the front though, with a bezel-less design and rounded corners. Now, most gaming smartphones have so far come with noticeable bezels at the top and bottom. This prevents accidental touches on the screen while gaming and also allows for a stronger grip.

However, this also makes the devices look a bit old-school as the conventional smartphones have now moved to a full-screen design with punch-hole cutouts or even under-display cameras. OPPO might now be looking to make a proper gaming smartphone that looks modern as well.

Unannounced OPPO gaming smartphone spotted in a certification listing

Mobile gaming is rising rapidly. Smartphone OEMs have also facilitated this growth with gaming-oriented handsets. Xiaomi (Black Shark series), Lenovo (Legion series), ASUS (ROG Phone series), and ZTE (Red Magic series), have all launched multiple gaming smartphones over the past few years. It appears OPPO is now preparing to jump on the bandwagon as well.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any other information about this upcoming OPPO handset. The phone exists in the company’s plans, as we can see in the EUIPO listing. However, there’s no way to confirm that it is already pursuing this device. We will have to wait for more information to emerge before things get clearer.
