The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 launched today, and it’s the very first smartphone from the company to feature an under-display camera. That’s not all, as this is also the first-ever foldable smartphone to include such technology.
Having said that, Samsung did reveal some information regarding that camera, but not much. We’ll have to wait until we get our hands on the device in order to put it through its paces.

What do we know thus far? Well, the company decided to include a 4-megapixel sensor here. We’re looking at an f/1.8 aperture lens here, 2.0um pixel size, and a field of view of 80 degrees.
Now, many of you are probably quite skeptical, as this is just a 4-megapixel sensor. It’s hard not to be. Not only that, but it’s a 4-megapixel sensor that sits under the display. Well, we don’t know if skepticism is justified just yet, but it doesn’t look great on paper.
Those pixels are quite large, though, and the aperture is also not bad, so that camera may surprise us. If that camera doesn’t suit you, however, there’s also a secondary camera on the outer display. That is a 10-megapixel unit, one that we’ve tested on some other Samsung phones, and it’s good enough.
The company is using something called the “Eco display technology”
Samsung said that it’s utilizing the so-called “Eco display technology” in order to use an under-display camera. It says that the display is 29-percent brighter (compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s) because of it, while it’s consuming less energy.
That is pretty much everything Samsung has said thus far. It’s not exactly surprising that the company decide to pilot-test this tech on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Samsung could have just easily not include a camera on that display at all, and only use the one on the secondary panel.
Samsung decided not to do that, but to try something different. It remains to be seen if it will pay off. One thing is for sure, it’s a great marketing tool, that’s for sure. It makes for some first times for both Samsung and the foldable smartphone industry.
