Microsoft has announced a new event for Wednesday, September 22. It will be an online-only event where the company will talk about “devices and Windows 11,” the official media invites say. The event kicks off at 11 am ET/3 pm GMT.

The company’s announcement tweet, as well as the landing page for the event on its official website, don’t reveal much as far as new devices are concerned. “Join us to see what’s next,” says the webpage, featuring a silhouette of a Surface Pro-like device (see the featured image above). Perhaps Microsoft will unveil new Surface laptops ahead of Windows 11 launch.

The next major iteration of the Windows operating system arrives on October 5th. So the company would be looking to showcase its shiny new hardware running the latest software. Microsoft is also due a successor to its much-hyped Surface Duo dual-screen Android smartphone. So there’s quite a lot to look forward to.

Microsoft could unveil the Surface Duo 2 at its upcoming event

The Microsoft Surface Duo is an excellent concept but the device leaves a lot to be desired. Software optimizations are mostly spot-on, enhancing productivity significantly. However, it lacks on the hardware front big time. Be it the processor, RAM and storage capacity, cameras, battery and charging, or even the revolutionary hinge that connects the two screens, the device didn’t justify the $1,500 price tag, let alone impress the users.

Microsoft would now be itching to set things in the right direction with the second-gen model, the Surface Duo 2. We are expecting a more advanced Snapdragon 888 SoC, 8GB of RAM, three rear cameras, 5G connectivity, an NFC chip, and many more upgrades. Hopefully, the company will deliver.

Along with the Surface Duo 2, we are also expecting Microsoft to unveil the successors to its Surface Book 3 and Surface Pro 7 Windows laptops during its fall hardware event later this month. For the Surface Book lineup, the company is reportedly switching from the current detachable form factor to a non-detachable display with a Surface Studio-like hinge. Microsoft may not even call it the Surface Book 4 but go for a “Surface Laptop” moniker. So the Surface Book 3 successor could arrive as the Surface Laptop Pro, or something similar.

The successor to the Surface Pro 7 should still be called Surface Pro 8 though. The teaser image from Microsoft suggests the new Surface Pro will be thinner than last year’s model. That would be a welcome change for the lineup. Just about three more weeks to go before we find out. Stay tuned for all the latest information.
