Netflix is bringing its Play Something feature, which it launched on TV in April, to its Android mobile app. This feature helps viewers find something to watch when they can’t decide on their own.

There are thousands of choices of TV shows and movies on Netflix. So the best of us can be racked with indecision when looking for something new to watch. This is when the Play Something feature comes into play. It doesn’t randomly pick up a show or movie for you though. Instead, the feature analyzes your viewing history and preferences to select a title that you may like to watch. Recommended titles may include a movie or show that you started watching but didn’t finish, something on your watchlist, or new releases in your favorite genres.

Netflix was first spotted working on Play Something, or something of this sort, back in August 2020. It eventually rolled out the feature on TV platforms in April this year. The company had said back then that it will bring the feature to its mobile apps in the coming months. Much to that promise, the Netflix Android app is now starting to pick up Play Something. The feature should reach all Android mobile devices globally in the coming days. The iOS app should also be joining the fun pretty soon.

On Android, Play Something gets a dedicated tab on the bottom navigation bar. A floating button will also appear on the bottom-right corner of the screen as you scroll through content on the homescreen.

“Play Something helps Netflix members discover new shows and movies when they don’t want to make decisions,” said Patrick Flemming, director of product innovation at Netflix. “Today, we’re excited to bring this feature to Android, too — choosing what to watch on your phone has never been easier.”

Fast Laughs is also coming to the Netflix Android app

In addition to Play Something, Netflix is also bringing the Fast Laughs feature to Android this week. It is a feed of funny clips pulled out from its catalog. The company hopes these kinds of innovations will help keep people engaged on its platform as short-form video services like TikTok and Instagram Reels lure people away from the TV.

Launched on iOS earlier this year, Fast Laughs is now available on the Android app in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Ireland, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Availability could expand to other regions in the future. Click the button below to download the latest version of Netflix for Android from the Google Play Store.
