Samsung has finally announced its first SoC that comes as a result of AMD collaboration. The chip in question is called the Exynos 2200, and it will fuel the Galaxy S22 series.Just to be clear. It will fuel those phones in some markets only, as Samsung will also use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The company didn’t confirm this, but it’s obvious at this point.

The Exynos 2200 is based on a 4nm EUV tech

The Exynos 2200 looks really powerful on paper. Samsung says that it will deliver “console quality graphics on mobile”. This chip uses 4nm EUV (extreme ultra violet) lithography processing technology in order to boost power efficiency.

It comes with a tri-cluster CPU structure. It consists out of an ARM Cortex-X2 core for peak performance, three Cortex-A710 cores for balanced processing, and four Cortex-A510 cores for efficiency. Just to be clear, all these cores are based on the latest Armv9 architecture.

The Exynos 2200 also offers AMIGO (advanced multi-IP governor) technology which keeps track of statuses of main components (including the CPU and GPU). It can adjust their settings in order to extend battery life.

It comes with the Eclipse 920 GPU, based on the AMD RDNA 2 architecture

Many of you are probably interested to know more about its GPU, right? Well, this processor comes with the Samsung Eclipse 920 GPU, which has the AMD RDNA 2 architecture. It offers hardware ray tracing technology which is supposed to simulate real-world light movement.

This GPU also supports variable rate shading (VRS) tech. That tech is expected to optimize GPU workloads. How does it do it? Well, it’s supposed to be applying lower shading rates in areas that don’t affect visual quality. As a result, you should be able to get stable frame rates.

Samsung did not share the clock speed of the CPU or the GPU, by the way. Now, this chip also comes with an NPU, and its performance is actually doubled compared to the Exynos 2100. It also offers better precision with FP16 support, and the same goes for INT8 and INT16.

A 3GPP Release 16 5G modem is also included, and it supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum bands. The chip supports LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 flash storage.

In regards to camera support, it supports rear single camera setups up to 200MP. When it comes to dual cameras, it has support for 64+32MP setups. It supports 8K 60 FPS playback, 10-bit HEVC (H.265), 30 FPS with 10-bit VP9, and so on.

It can handle high refresh rates on high-res displays

It can also handle displays up to 4K/WQUXGA at 120Hz refresh rate, and QHD+ at 144Hz refresh rate. Bluetooth 5.2 is supported, and the same goes for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax).

Samsung added that the Exynos 2200 is currently in mass production. So, we should see it in action next month, when the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra become official.
