Samsung‘s Galaxy S22 series has launched to a warm public reception globally. The word of mouth is very strong, helping drive sales. Well, the devices are still in the pre-order period but numbers tell the demand is sky-high. According to a new report coming from South Korea, Samsung received more than one million pre-orders for the Galaxy S22 trio in its homeland in just eight days.
As many as 300,000 Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra units were sold on the first day of the pre-order period. The Galaxy S8 series released back in 2017 had hit that milestone last. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 came close with 270,000 units sold on day one. The latest Galaxy flagships have now topped that.
Overall, the Galaxy S22 trio saw 1.02 million pre-orders in South Korea during the eight days between February 14 to February 21. That number for the Galaxy S8 series comes in at 1.4 million. But those phones reportedly had an 11-day pre-order period. The aforementioned foldable duo were the best-selling Samsung smartphones during the pre-order period in recent years. They sold 920,000 units combined last year, ZDNet Korea reports.
The new report also reveals the most-popular Galaxy S22 model in South Korea so far. It should be an easy guess though: the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which has accounted for more than 60 percent of the overall pre-orders. This phone revives the Galaxy Note series that Samsung discontinued last year, albeit we no longer have the Note branding here. Many Note 10 and Note 20 series users may have upgraded to the Galaxy S22 Ultra this year.
Samsung is struggling to keep up with the Galaxy S22 demand
The Galaxy S22 series has yet to go on general sales. That begins tomorrow, February 25. But the pre-order demand has been so high that the company is now struggling to keep up with it. We are staring at shipping delays of up to three months for select storage and color variants. Perhaps the ongoing global shortage of semiconductor chips caused production delays. But either way, it’s consumers who have to suffer. Many people who have already paid for a new Galaxy flagship are now having to wait for weeks and months to get their hands on it.
Samsung, in its part, did ramp up Galaxy S22 production by 20 percent anticipating a high demand. But that isn’t helping it avoid shipping delays. It will be interesting to see how that affects the sales of the new Galaxy flagship trio.
