There’s a lot to be said about the short update cycle for Android devices and some aren’t happy with the flow of those from Google either. Specifically, on its Pixel-branded handsets, although 3-years is far longer than most OEMs provide. But that doesn’t mean Samsung isn’t happy to challenge the search giant on that front either. In fact, all of the new Samsung Galaxy S22 series handsets will see no fewer than 3 years of updates. Both firmware and security patches.
More succinctly, that means that buyers of the newly-announced Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus, and Galaxy S22 Ultra won’t just see Android 12. They should see Android 13 and Android 14 as well, regardless of which configuration is bought. If not further updates. And the handsets will be kept up-to-date on security for the period too.
Samsung updating the Galaxy S22 Series for 3 years is a big deal
Now, as noted above, Samsung isn’t the only OEM to challenge Google on this front. But it has been doing it for arguably longer than most competitors.
Moreover, in recent months, the company has consistently matched or beaten the search giant when it comes to getting those updates shipped. So its continued challenge, providing 3 years of updates for its Samsung Galaxy S22 series devices is significant.
With these updates in place, buyers of the new flagship series will see their handsets receive Android version and security updates at the same rate as Google’s own devices. Or better, if the trend continues.
That sets a high bar for fellow competitors to aspire to. And has the potential to continue pushing Google to do even better with its own updates. But, more importantly, it helps buyers of the new Samsung Galaxy S22 series keep their devices for longer — up to 3 years. With that figure chiefly depending on how soon, after launch, they buy the gadget.
