Samsung Is Using Repurposed Discarded Fishing Nets In Galaxy S22

Samsung, the biggest smartphone vendor in the world for the past several years, has been leading by example by making its products environmentally friendly. The number of awards and recognitions the Korean brand has received for its measures speaks volumes of its sustainability efforts. In a continuation of these efforts, the company has now revealed that it is using discarded fishing nets in the Galaxy S22 series.

According to Samsung, discarded fishing nets are one of the biggest threats to ocean life. While people usually see water bottles and grocery bags as ocean-bound plastics, more than 640,000 tons of fishing nets reportedly end up in the big waterbodies every year. These nets trap and entangle marine life, damage coral reefs, affect natural habitats, and even find their way into our food and water sources.

The South Korean behemoth is now repurposing these discarded fishing nets as part of its Galaxy for the Planet journey. It has developed a new material using these abandoned plastic nets. Samsung plans to use this material in its entire product lineup in the future. The journey will begin with the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. The new devices go official on February 9, 2022.

“These discarded fishing nets are disrupting the delicate balance of our environment at an alarming rate. Collecting and repurposing these nets are vital first steps in keeping our oceans clean as well as preserving the planet and our collective future,” Samsung said in a press release. “This new technological advancement marks a notable achievement in the company’s journey to deliver tangible environmental actions and protect the planet for generations to come.”

Samsung takes another major step in its sustainability efforts

Samsung already uses eco-conscious materials such as recycled post-consumer material (PCM) and recycled paper in its devices. Its mobile chargers, TV remotes, and packaging materials all use recycled materials. The company has also achieved 100 percent renewable energy in its several factories located in the US, Europe, and China. Its Galaxy S21 series had also received the “Reducing CO_2″ certificate from the Carbon Trust.

Now, by recycling ocean-bound fishing nets, Samsung has taken another major step in its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. The Korean brand promises to expand the usage of these materials and also uncover additional environment-friendly solutions in the future. It will share more details about its vision for a sustainable future at the Galaxy Unpacked on February 9. The online event begins at 10 a.m. EST/ 3 p.m. GMT.
