MediaTek formally unveiled its flagship 4nm mobile SoC, the Dimensity 9000, in November 2021. While the subsequently launched Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 grabbed all the attention heading into 2022, new Geekbench 5 data shows that the MediaTek offering is no slouch in terms of performance.

Renowned leaker Ice universe revealed the Geekbench 5 scores of a mystery Xiaomi device running on the Dimensity 9000, and the results are pretty impressive. Phone Arena speculates that the phone listed here could be the upcoming Redmi K50 Pro Plus.

As the screenshot reveals, this Xiaomi device scored 4,546 points in the multi-core test and 1,309 points in the single-core test. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra running on the Exynos 2200 chip scored 3,307 and 1,157 points in the multi-core single-core tests, respectively. The Pixel 6 Pro with the custom Google Tensor SoC could only score 2,832 points and 1,042 points in the two tests.

Ice Universe claims that phones featuring the Dimensity 9000 could sell in the range of $500

Although the Dimensity 9000 is yet to appear on smartphones, a couple of devices are reportedly on the horizon. OPPO is expected to unveil the Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition in its home region of China. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Redmi K50 Pro Plus will also hit markets soon. While it’s hard to tell much from the benchmark scores alone, this could give MediaTek a unique advantage in the mobile industry.

Ice Universe also suggests that phones bearing the Dimensity 9000 may cost around $500. So the lower cost could convince OEMs to pick MediaTek’s new offering. It’s also worth pointing out that the Dimensity 9000 leverages TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing process and the new Armv9 architecture. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the Exynos 2200 use Samsung’s 4nm process. Apple’s A15 Bionic, however, continues to dominate benchmark scores.

MediaTek’s latest offering won’t make it to U.S. shores as it lacks 5G mmWave support. But phones bearing the Dimensity 9000 chip will undoubtedly sell in the millions across key Asian markets.

It has been a long wait for Dimensity 9000 phones, even though it was announced well before Qualcomm’s offering. The latter has already featured on multiple devices, including the Moto Edge X30 and Samsung’s trio of Galaxy S22 flagships.
