The Koran media recently claimed that Samsung is planning to use MediaTek chipsets in its upcoming flagship smartphones in some markets. But that may not be true. The Korean brand may not have any such plans, at least not according to a couple of well-known tipsters. Both @chunvn8888 and Yogesh Brar claim that a MediaTek-powered Galaxy S22 FE isn’t happening, not this year, nor in the future.
The previous report said Samsung is looking to use MediaTek chipsets in half of the Galaxy S22 FE units. No name was revealed but since the device is expected to come out in Q3 2022 or early Q4, it should have been the Dimensity 9000. The Taiwanese brand is unlikely to announce an upgraded version until later in the year.
However, that’s not going to happen. The Galaxy S22 FE will not come in a Dimensity 9000 processor variant, the tipsters have confirmed. This should mean the new Fan Edition Galaxy will still get either Exynos or Snapdragon chipset depending on the region.
Samsung is planning to make custom processors for its Galaxy smartphones
The aforementioned report from the Korean media also claimed that the Galaxy S23 would use MediaTek chipsets in Asian markets. It was not specified whether Samsung is planning to offer its new flagships in three processor variants depending on the market, or would it replace either Exynos or Snapdragon variants with the Taiwanese brand’s Dimensity solutions. But considering how consistently poor Samsung’s in-house Exynos processors have been in recent years, it would have been only logical if the company ditched Exynos in favor of Dimensity.
However, Samsung isn’t going to do that too. Instead, it’s planning to make custom processors for its flagship smartphones. The company’s head of mobile business recently confirmed the plans. It’s unclear whether the Korean behemoth’s semiconductor arm, Samsung LSI, would manufacture these chips or it would turn to some other vendor. Perhaps the reports of Samsung using MediaTek processors could be an indication that the Taiwanese firm would make Samsung’s custom processors.
Unfortunately, there’s no confirmation on this yet. But Samsung surely knows its Exynos processors are underperforming and it needs to fix it soon before it’s too late. Otherwise, its aim of increasing the use of the in-house processors in its smartphones may never come to fruition.
