A new report claims that AT&T is increasing the prices of some of its older cellular plans. The carrier clarified that the price increase wouldn’t impact customers of existing AT&T plans. Instead, this move intends to encourage customers of older plans to switch to the more recent offerings.

Bloomberg reports that the carrier will begin charging an additional $6/month for single-line customers, and $12/month for users on family plans. Affected customers will receive an email informing them of the increase in their monthly bills. These changes will take effect starting June 1, 2022, as per AT&T.

“We are encouraging our customers to explore our newer plans which offer many additional features, more flexibility for each line on their account and, in many cases, a lower monthly cost,” AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom told The Verge (via Phone Arena).

AT&T is blaming the price increases on inflation

According to Bloom, the email sent to customers “may indicate that the customer may be interested in one of our more current plans either to save on their monthly charge or get additional features for a slightly higher cost each month.”

AT&T offers a list of its cellular plans that no longer exist on its website. Customers can learn what plan they’re on through the carrier’s dedicated page.

The price increase was always on the cards based on AT&T CEO John Stankey’s words last month. So what has led the carrier to bump the prices of some of its older plans? Well, inflation, at least according to AT&T. Stankey predicts other carriers will take a similar route in the future due to the same factors.

You have nothing to worry about if you’re on one of AT&T’s current plans, such as the $50/month (single-line) plan with 4GB of data. Meanwhile, users on older plans can consider switching to the new Value Plus plan costing $50/month with unlimited talk, text, and data. However, this plan is only available for single-line customers.
