Samsung last week began rolling out the May 2022 Android security patch to its devices. It started slowly but has now picked up the pace. The new security update has rolled out to several Galaxy smartphones in recent days. The Galaxy S20 series is joining in the act today.
As of this writing, the May SMR (Security Maintenance Release) is live for the 5G variants of the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra in Germany. The update should reach other European countries as well as the rest of the world in the coming days. It should also be available to the LTE variants of the phones soon. The new firmware version for the 5G-enable units is G98*BXXUEFVDB.
Samsung recently published the detailed content of the May SMR. The new security patch brings fixes for over 50 vulnerabilities found in Google’s version of Android as well as the Korean firm’s custom software. As many as seven of these vulnerabilities were labeled critical by the companies.
The Galaxy S20 5G phones may also be getting some other bug fixes and enhancements with this update. But don’t be hopeful of any major new features, though. The phones recently receive the One UI 4.1 update with tons of goodies in tow. The Android 13-based One UI 5.0 should be the next major feature update for the 2020 flagships. The update may not arrive until late in the year though, or maybe in 2023. We will keep you posted.
The Galaxy S20 series joins the May update party
Launched in early 2020, the Galaxy S20 series arrived with Android 10 out of the box. It has since received updates to Android 11 and Android 12. The devices are eligible for one more Android OS update, i.e. Android 13. Samsung has recently revamped its software support policy promising four years of major Android updates for newer flagships and select premium mid-range models. But the Galaxy S20 series is not eligible for that. They continue to get monthly security updates, though. These updates will come for at least a couple more years but, the frequency may go down from 2023.
Nonetheless, if you’re using any of the 2020 Samsung flagships in Europe, you can expect to receive the May security update soon. Users in other regions can also look forward to it in the coming weeks. Watch out for a notification about the OTA (over the air) update. Alternatively, you can head over to Settings > Software update on your phone to manually check for updates.
