The Google Play Store is getting a new logo. The updated logo has yet to replace the existing Play Store app icon on your Android phone. But 9to5Google has spotted it in GPay and Google Pay. A wider rollout may follow in the coming weeks.
The new Play Store logo isn’t a complete redesign or anything as such. Perhaps most regular users may not even notice the difference. But a close look at it reveals a minor design tweak and color changes. While the icon is still a triangle, the corners are now more rounded.
The internal partitions that divide the icon into four parts have been tweaked to make the parts more equal in size. The current icon has the blue triangle occupying more space than the green, red, and yellow-colored parts. Speaking of colors, the blue and green hues are darker than before. The changes to the other two shades are less prominent.
The blue, green, red, and yellow shades used in the reworked Play Store logo are more aligned with the rest of the Google products. So this appears to be a change arriving a little too late. But having said that, it’s unclear when the new logo rolled out. The publication spotted it when making a Play Store transaction in GPay and Google Pay. It appeared as the merchant icon.
Interestingly, Google recently redesigned the web version of the Play Store. It would have been a good time to roll out the new logo. But the company chose to do it rather silently. If the plan is to make it permanent and use it across Android, then we should soon see a new icon for the Play Store.
The Google Play store gets a new logo after years
The Google Play logo is omnipresent on Android and pretty much every Android user would instantly recognize it. As such, frequently redesigning the logo may not be a good idea. And Google hasn’t done that for more than five years now. The last change came back in May 2017 when the company dropped the shopping bag silhouette from the icon.
A minor redesign now appears to be on the way. This comes shortly after Google removed the Movies & TV tab from the Play Store. The Books tab may also exit the Play Store soon so the app is entirely focused on Android apps and games. We will let you know if and when that happens.
