Samsung is on a roll today. Not only has it released the August 2022 Android security patch ahead of time but also rolled out the update to a bunch of devices. The Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy S20 series are all receiving next month’s security update. The rollout is currently limited to select regions, but it’s now only a matter of time before it goes global.

As of this writing, the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra are receiving the August SMR (Security Maintenance Release) in Europe. Rolling out with firmware version S90*BXXU2AVG6, the update is also available in Russia and the Caucasian region. Users in other regions, including the US, can expect to pick up the latest security release in the coming days.

The official changelog on Samsung’s update tracker mentions stability improvements along with next month’s security fixes. Unfortunately, there’s still some time to go before the company publishes the August security bulletin. So we can’t yet confirm what the new SMR contains. As usual, there will be fixes for several dozen vulnerabilities, including some Galaxy-exclusive ones. But we will have to wait for the official release for specifics such as the nature and severity of those.

Meanwhile, all those security fixes are already rolling out to the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra as well. The update for Samsung’s 2021 flagships is currently only available to users in Germany. It comes with firmware version G99*BXXU5CVGB. The rollout should expand to the rest of Europe in the coming days before eventually going global. These phones are likely picking up some stability improvements as well.

The Galaxy S20 series is also receiving the August security update

The August SMR is also available for the Galaxy S20 series. Samsung is rolling out the new security update to both LTE and 5G models of its 2020 flagships, with firmware versions G98*BXXUEFVG5 and G98*FXXUEFVG5, respectively. Once again, the rollout is limited to Germany but a wider rollout should be just around the corner. The Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra may also be receiving some stability optimizations with this update. Unfortunately, we don’t have the changelog handy to confirm that.

Nonetheless, if you’re using any of Samsung’s past three generations of Galaxy S series flagships, the latest security update should be available to you soon if it hasn’t already. Watch out for a notification about the OTA (over the air) rollout in the coming days. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app.
