Google is seemingly preparing a new product under its Nest lineup for launch in the coming months. A mysterious wireless device with model number G28DR has surfaced on the FCC database. While the listing is quite short of information, the tidbits about it point to a Nest product.

First spotted by 9to5Google, the FCC listing vaguely refers to this Google product as a “Wireless Device”. It is Wi-Fi 5-certified with support for the 5GHz bands. The device boasts Bluetooth connectivity but lacks other common connectivity options such as NFC and UWB (ultra-wideband). For power, it features a 3.65V battery, which may be rechargeable via a USB Type-C port.

That’s pretty much all the key information the publication could find in the FCC documents. Based on this, the mysterious Google device appears to be a Nest product. One probable candidate is a new Nest Cam model. The company has previously launched Nest security cameras with 3.65V rechargeable batteries.

Having said that, Google did refresh its Nest Cam lineup last year with multiple new products. While another battery-powered model will be a welcome addition, there’s a possibility that we are looking at something else here. Perhaps a doorbell? The company has already confirmed that a wired Nest Doorbell is on the way. It will address various shortcomings of the wireless model, such as the lack of 24/7 video streaming. So the new battery-powered device could be an upgraded wireless Nest Doorbell.

Of course, these are mere speculations. There’s no telling what Google has in the making. The company is even due for an upgrade to its flagship Nest Learning Thermostat. The last one came over five years ago. It did launch the affordable Nest Thermostat in 2020 but the top-of-the-line model is awaiting a refresh for years.

A new Nest smart speaker wouldn’t hurt either

This mysterious Google product will likely launch this fall hardware season, probably alongside the Pixel 7 series and the Pixel Watch. The company usually launches new smart speakers in the fall as well. A new model this year wouldn’t hurt.

But we doubt this “Wireless Device” is a Nest smart speaker. There haven’t been any battery-powered Nest speakers yet. Moreover, the FCC documents say the device will have a regulatory label on its back. Google’s speakers usually have it on the underside.

As the new report notes, Google’s Stadia Controller is also battery-powered and uses a similar combination of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. So we can’t rule out the possibility of the new “Wireless Device” not being a Nest product. We will have to wait for more information to emerge before we can paint a clearer picture.
