Samsung opened pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 on August 10, immediately after the Galaxy Unpacked event. To attract buyers to its online store, it offered an enhanced trade-in credit of $900 when upgrading from last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 3. But the company has now quietly dropped the credit value for the 128GB storage variant by $200. You now only get $700 in trade-in credit for the base variant. The full $900 credit is only available for the 256GB storage option of the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
When pre-orders for the new clamshell foldable first opened, Samsung.com was offering $900 in trade-in credit for either Galaxy Z Flip 3 storage variants. It only showed one option for the phone. You select it and get a $900 discount on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. But in recent days, the trade-in list started showing the 128GB and 256GB models of the Flip 3 separately, with different credit values. If you have the latter, you still get $900, but for the former, you only get $700.
This is a loss of $200 for those who waited to trade in their 128GB Galaxy Z Flip 3. What makes things worse is that the 256GB variant only cost $100 more when purchased last year. So this drop in credit value doesn’t even offset the cost difference.
Samsung still offers the double storage pre-order perk on the Galaxy Z Flip 4, though. It gives you the 256GB model at the price of the base variant. The two variants are priced at $1,060 and $1,000, respectively. So it’s a saving of $60. And if you’re upgrading from a 256GB Galaxy Z Flip 3, you get the latest clamshell foldable with the same amount of storage for just $160.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 also comes in a 512GB storage option this year. It costs $1,180. Despite reports suggesting a price hike, Samsung has done well to offer the new clamshell foldable at the same price as last year’s model.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is already shipping in some regions
Samsung will begin general sales of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 on August 26. Perhaps all the products announced at Galaxy Unpacked last week will go on sale next Friday. However, the company has already begun shipping the devices in some regions, or at least in the Netherlands. The devices started shipping in the country the very next day of Unpacked.
