Netflix Is Making Its Own Game Studio

When Netflix announced that it was developing mobile games, we all thought that it was going to be a flash in the pan. However, the streaming giant has some major plans to usher itself into the gaming sphere. The company has always relied on third-party companies to develop its games, but Netflix is actually building its own game studio.

Despite Netflix’s efforts, the streaming service doesn’t come to mind whenever we think about video games. The company has a collection of games on the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store. While the company has put a lot of marketing into its games, it turned out that less than 1% of Netflix users actually play those games.

But Netflix is building its own game studio

While not many people are taking Netflix seriously as a gaming company, it’s going ahead to make its own studio. The company previously acquired several game studios to produce its games. Not only that but the company recently partnered with Ubisoft to work on three exclusive games over the next couple of years. This involves an Assassin’s Creed game.

Now, it looks like the company wants to go out on its own and craft some homemade games. It’s going to build a first-party game studio in Helsinki, Finland.

At this point, we don’t know just what kind of games the company plans on producing. While it’s likely that the company will make more mobile games, we can’t rule out more involved games. The thing is that the company might also be working on a cloud gaming service.

This is a major “If”, but Netflix recently posted a job posting saying that’s looking for “new ways of delivering entertainment that requires real-time, ultra-low latency network transport technologies.” Also, the company wants to “directly impact an emerging area of business.” Cloud gaming is an emerging area of business and it also needs low-latency input. If this is the case, then we should be prepared for some major projects from Netflix.
