Samsung is looking to address two of the biggest shortcomings of its clamshell foldables next year. Display industry expert Ross Young last week revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature a bigger external display and a new hinge technology that reduces the crease along the fold line on the inner display. These claims have now received the backing of another reputed tipster Ice Universe. The latter has also shared more information about Samsung’s proposed changes for the next-gen foldable.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 may feature a redesigned hinge

According to the new report, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature a “water drop type” hinge similar to the one found in OPPO’s upcoming Find N2 Flip. This hinge design will leave a water drop-shaped gap between the two halves of the folding display along the fold line. A less sharp fold will eliminate the extremely noticeable crease that appears across the middle of the screen when the device is unfolded. Samsung has been reducing the crease with each new generation of foldables, but only barely. The fifth-gen model may finally bring a notable improvement.

As for the external display, Ice Universe is once again giving a reference to the OPPO Find N2 Flip. The latter has a 3.26-inch display on the outside. Samsung reportedly plans to equip the Galaxy Z Flip 5 with a similar-sized cover display. The source didn’t share the precise specifications, but the previous rumor also claimed an external display bigger than 3 inches diagonally. So we might be in for a substantially bigger solution from the 1.9-inch panel found on the outside of the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

The latest report also claims a bigger battery inside the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The 3,700mAh unit in the current model is a little on the smaller side. It isn’t enough to keep the phone alive throughout the day if you’re a power user. The OPPO Find N2 Flip has a 4300mAh battery. While Samsung may not match its Chinese rival, it could go up to 4,000mAh. All these changes could make the device a little bulky, though. Time will tell how the Korean behemoth keeps things in control.

That said, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is still months away. Samsung will likely unveil its fifth-gen foldables in August next year. That’s plenty of time for the company to test these kinds of changes and drop what doesn’t work. So take these rumors with caution. The end product may not implement everything we are hearing today. Things should get clearer closer to the phone’s launch.
