Samsung recently released the January 2023 Android security patch for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G in some markets. But, not everyone is lucky enough to get the latest security update so quickly. Ask users with a carrier-locked unit in the US. They have been waiting for the December SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for a while. The update is finally available for them.

Last month’s security update for the carrier-locked Galaxy Z Flip 5G in the US comes with firmware version F707USQS3GVL1, SamMobile reports. The company confirms the rollout on Sprint and T-Mobile’s networks, which are pretty much the only carriers that offered the 5G version of the original clamshell foldable stateside.

All eligible users should pick up this release within the next few days. The unlocked units of this phone have already received the update in the US. This applies to both carrier-locked and unlocked units of the Galaxy Z Flip LTE as well.

Unsurprisingly, this update doesn’t bring any new features or enhancements to the aging foldable. Samsung recently updated it to Android 13, its third and final major Android OS upgrade. It brought a host of goodies, including a refreshed UI.

The latest release is all about vulnerability fixes. The December SMR contains around 80 patches for Galaxy devices, including a few critical ones. Make sure to update your Galaxy Z Flip 5G as quickly as possible.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is already receiving the January update in some markets

As said earlier, Samsung has already released the January SMR for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, as well as the Galaxy Z Flip LTE. The rollout began in Europe last week. The update should soon reach other markets, including the US.

Samsung should soon seed the latest security patch to other eligible Galaxy devices as well. The likes of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are still waiting for the new SMR.

Meanwhile, if you’re using a carrier-locked Galaxy Z Flip 5G in the US, last month’s security patch is now available for your phone. Go to Settings > Software update and tap on Download and install to update your phone manually.

If there’s no update available for you, wait a few days and check again. You may get a notification once the OTA (over the air) release hits your unit. Stay tuned for the January update. We will let you know when the rollout begins for the US versions of the original clamshell foldable.
