Social media companies like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and so on might be in for a serious court case. The usage of these platforms by youths has drawn the attention of some lawyers, who are taking the matter to court. In February, these lawyers will submit a consolidated complaint to the court.

This complaint questions the way social media platforms are being used by the public. In the Northern District of California sits the court that will receive this case and look into it. The lawyers filing this case argue that social media platforms are destroying the lives of young ones in various ways.

They claim that these platforms cause various mental illnesses among young ones in society. From their point of view, the usage of products from social media companies is addictive and needs to be put in check. The lawyers hope to convince the court of the need to urgently regulate these platforms.

Social media platforms, constructive or destructive tools in the society

Some people might argue that this case against social media companies can’t hold water. Points are that the usage of these platforms is what has a telling effect on society and not the platforms themselves. But, this does not refute the fact that these platforms pose a threat to society at large.

The influx of social media content from various sources can be stressful to keep up with. Many young people have found themselves drowning in the ocean of non-stop posts on social media platforms. For a fact, Meta has come clean to admit that it is aware that young Instagram users suffer from various mental illnesses.

Still, it is good to note the content posted on these social media platforms isn’t curated by the firms. This might pose a challenge to the case against social media companies. These contents come from millions of users around the world, all sharing their ideas via various social media platforms.

Social media companies have been able to keep certain content out of their platforms. But, that doesn’t seem to be enough as the younger generations are still facing the risk of mental illnesses. Content on these platforms tends to shape how these young ones think and inculcate values in them that aren’t healthy for society.

The lawyers behind this case against social media companies are fighting for regulations to guide social media posts. These regulations will help to curb the amount of harmful content young ones consume while using social media. If the court finds the argument of the lawyers logical, then social media companies will be under pressure to renew their regulations.
