Nowadays, most people know Netflix as the streaming service that rules the entertainment industry, but it also has a DVD rental business that a lot of us don’t know about. Well, there’s not much time to get acquainted, as it’s going away. Netflix will stop offering DVD rentals this September.

Say goodbye to Netflix DVD rentals

This is going to be a gradual process over the next couple of months. Netflix announced this in a blog post titled “The Final Season.” In a nutshell, the company is going to wind down its DVD rental business that operates from the site DVD.com.

As you can imagine, as the demand and competition in the streaming market increase, DVDs and other physical forms of media have seen a sharp decline. Netflix’s streaming business is one of the major players in this, ironically. Thus, the company has made the decision to saw off this limb.

Netflix will wind down its DVD rentals over the next couple of months. During this time, you may see a diminishing library of DVDs that you can rent. However, the company will ship out its final disks on September 29th.

At that point, we don’t know how many movies will be available, so you’ll want to act sooner rather than later.

The company is older than you think

As stated before, most people know Netflix as the company that streams Stranger Things, but the company’s roots go back even further than that. The company’s roots should be evident in its name. NETflix came out in the age when people were starting to realize the potential of the internet. It began as a company that allowed you to order DVDs via the web back in 1997.

This introduced numerous people to the concept of ordering something rather than going out and getting it. With the ease of using the internet, one could simply click their mouse and order a DVD right to their door. Now, Netflix is closing the book (or DVD case) on this chapter in its business.
