Not too long ago, Google introduced a random file limit in Google Drive. It limited how many files you could upload to the cloud storage platform. It was frustrating, but it seems that the company had some second thoughts. According to 9To5Google, Google reversed this.
Why did Google place a file limit on Google Drive?
Google posted a tweet explaining why it chose to bring this limit. The company said that it was to preserve stability on the platform. This change came as a surprise, and it sounds like it’d be extremely frustrating. However, the company said that it only affected a small number of people.
Users spotted this limit in the wild and reported it on Reddit. According to those reports, Google put a 5 million item limit on people’s accounts. If a user had more than 5 million items in their drive, then it won’t let them upload any more until other files were deleted.
That was, understandably, frustrating. Also, it didn’t matter if you were a free user or you paid for Google One; the limit was there.
So, Google was right when it said that it only affected a small part of the user base. Accumulating 5 million files in Google Drive is quite a task. This would mostly be for companies where hundreds of people are uploading files on a constant basis.
There might be more changes
So, Google rolled back the Drive file limit, but we’re not sure that the company is going to stop there. In the Tweet, the company said that it is “[exploring] alternate approaches to ensure a great experience for all.”
We don’t know what other alternatives the company is considering, but it seems that we’re not done seeing changes to Google Drive. Maybe the company is starting to have trouble managing all of the files stored on its servers. It costs money to keep those servers up and running, and the economy is in a bad place. That’s just speculation, but, hopefully, we won’t see any more limits in the near future.
