Samsung is seemingly getting closer to launching its first-gen smart ring, aptly called Galaxy Ring. The company has reportedly finalized the key health-tracking technologies for the device. We don’t yet have a precise launch date, or even a timeframe, though.

Samsung has shown interest in a smart ring product for a long time. Early patent applications related to such wearable devices from the Korean tech giant date back several years. But it reportedly got serious about commercially releasing a health monitoring smart ring last year. Shortly after the Korean media reported that Samsung has begun work on the device, it filed a trademark application for the moniker Galaxy Ring.

The latest word from the industry is that Samsung plans to offer a PPG (Photoplethysmography) sensor and an ECG (Electrocardiogram)sensor on the device. The idea is to make the Galaxy Ring a comprehensive mobile health and fitness tracker. Since its inner surface will wrap around your finger, it can measure your activities, heart activity, sleep, and other health parameters more accurately than existing smartwatches and fitness bands.

Samsung may be contemplating the best time to launch the Galaxy Ring

A new report coming from South Korea states that Samsung is on the verge of a “significant technical milestone” for the Galaxy Ring. However, it won’t rush to bring the product to the market. The company is evaluating its market demand and its effect on smartwatch sales. Since many people buy a smartwatch for health monitoring, they might find the Galaxy Ring a better solution. Its unobtrusive size makes it perfect for continuous wearing.

This could affect Samsung’s Galaxy Watch sales, though. By the looks of it, the Korean firm will take its time before launching the first-gen Galaxy Ring. The smart ring market is relatively new and doesn’t have many players. Italian luxury brand Gucci teamed up with Finnish healthcare company Oura to launch an 18-carat gold smart ring last year. Otherwise, the market is almost untouched by any other big names.

But Samsung isn’t the only tech biggie working on a smart ring. Apple is also said to be readying a similar product. The world’s two largest smartphone companies seemingly plan to offer the wearable device as a companion health monitoring gadget that could also serve as an input device and controller for the phone. It remains to be seen which smartphone giant comes out on top. Stay tuned for more information about Samsung’s Galaxy Ring.
