Samsung may not upgrade the Galaxy Z Flip 5 selfie camera

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 may not get an improved selfie camera, at least in terms of resolution. The company reportedly plans to stick with a 10MP front camera on the new clamshell foldable. It’s unclear if it’s the same sensor found on last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 or if the Korean firm will equip the upcoming 2023 model with a new 10MP camera.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 may get the same 10MP selfie camera as the Flip 4

Samsung has used a 10MP selfie camera on its Flip series foldables since the first-gen model in 2020. The phones have undergone numerous changes over the years but the front camera remained unchanged. However, the company was expected to tweak things a little this year.

That’s because it gave a resolution upgrade to the selfie camera of its Galaxy S series flagships this year. The Galaxy S23 lineup features a 12MP front camera, up from a 10MP solution Samsung has used since the Galaxy S10 series in 2019.

It appears the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will not get the same treatment. Samsung will seemingly equip the new foldable with a 10MP selfie camera. As said earlier, there’s no telling if it’s the same sensor as last year’s model. There’s little hope it isn’t, though.

The company may have improved the image quality with improved camera software and other optimizations. But it is probably the same camera hardware. Things should get clearer over the next few weeks as leaks start coming more frequently.

Rear cameras also double up as selfie shooters

The 10MP selfie camera found on Samsung’s Flip series foldables isn’t the same as its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series flagships. The latter devices have always got a better solution. However, that’s hardly a problem.

The foldables have a secondary display on the outside, so you can capture selfies with the rear cameras as well. And rear cameras are usually better than selfie solutions in everything from aperture and autofocus technology to resolution and image quality.

With the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung is making the cover display even bigger. Rumors have it that the new clamshell foldable will sport a 3.4-inch square-shaped display on the outside. That’s much larger than the 1.9-inch rectangular panel found on the 2022 model.

With this change, capturing selfies with the rear cameras will be much easier on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. While it’d be nice if Samsung upgraded the selfie camera, an unchanged sensor isn’t a deal-breaker.
